A name to compete with paypal. Paid 270K for it in 1996, tell me what you think it's worth.

Hi Phil,

Welcome, as I am sure you are aware this may only compete with paypal if it had been developed accordingly - I only get a landing page.

Traffic?

Google - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q="payables&btnG=Search

1.9 mill results compared to 66 mill for payable.

OV negligible:

Searches done in October 2005
Count Search Term
310 account payables
198 payables
102 day payables outstanding

If as you say you paid 270K 9 years ago I fear you may never get a reasonable offer even close to that figure.

I see it has been for sale on various outlets for $xxx, xxx , In my opinion if you can get $xx,xxx than maybe cut your losses JMO

Good luck

Ouch, 270k in 1996...Imagine how many 3 letter domains you could be sitting on.

As a company name is doesn't have much of a ring to it.

1. Requiring payment on a certain date; due.
2. Requiring payment to a particular person or entity.

It's the "Requiring" part of the definition that gets me. A paypal-like company shouldn't sound like a tax collector. Perhaps more interest would be made by an invoicing or accounts receivable specialized corporation.

Like the last poster said high xx,xxx might be your best price for a while still.

If you sold wholesale, tomorrow, I'd say $45,000.

EDIT

Goes to show if you hold a domain long enough you can get your price. I'm sure we'll see this headlining the DNJournal if it really went down.

Good for you,

It that the only reason you joined the forum :?

as it was not yours as of yesterday it should not have been up for appraisal. :td:

Trust you feel suitably chastised :hehe:

you must be very lucky if it sold for 800k.
I would never think it could be worth that much undeveloped. It doesnt sound as nice as paypal and certainly not as easy to type.
Good luck on your sale!

Well thats dirty of you, you and I both know its impossible to truly appraise the value of a name to an end user, but I would never have guessed it would have sold for that much.

If you did indeed sell it for 800K then you would have no problems sending me 5K via PayPal to prove you did, heay its Christmas lol congrats if it is so...

I find the whole matter quite bizarre. I agree with wossisname, it just doesn't flow or sound quite right but hey, you give me hope with some of the crap i've got!! he he

It makes more sense to me as a billing service domain. I can't believe anyone would pay what you claim you sold this domain for. Any proof of sale?

the worth is in the low $x,xxx

sounds like some of us here are skeptical of the report of this $800,000 sale...
well, we can just wait few days and see if the whois reflect ownership change...

I was about to say... Someone must've really did a sales pitch on you back in 1996.
That name's not that great. Certainly not $270k worth. Maybe $xxxx to an accounting company or something.

If you really sold it, I trust we'll see it on DNJournal, no?

the buyer paid 300K down and the balance is due in 30 days. In 30 days Ill tranfer the name, which was the agreement.

My point is that the reason I never join these type of forums is because I am the only one ever selling names. When I do get a big sale, I get demeaned for it and a thousand threads about how stupid my buyer rmust have been. I guess It's hard and it hurts my feelings sometimes but the hurt seems to go away when i step out on the porch of my million dollar home and overlook the lake from the comfort of my hottub.

then I hear the roar of an H1. It must be my wife returning from Gene Juarez.

It seems like everyone else just talks about them. I sell them.

800K was good, but he wants to battle paypal and wanted the name.

And that totally stupid purchase of pokersforum.com for 100.00? Just wait until I post the check im getting for that.

Phil

Wow - what a fantastic user friendly guy you are , obviously one of a kind- can we have a block autograph :? :hi:

I am sure with your experience and past success you will have much to contribute to the forum. I see you have upgraded your profile - makes me think even more that you should / could have a lot to offer JMO

If I bought a mutual fund with 13% yield 9 years ago, I would have got the same $800K, a little more sure thing. Still congrat on your sale.

Where do you find a mutual fund with a 13% yield????

Anyway the thing that strikes me odd is that if the deal is not concluded why start shouting about it.

If I was the buyer and read this thread I would back out of the deal.

You bought Payables.com for $270k in 1996? Your claimed resale aside, that was a horrible purchase considering the year.

Here are what some famous names sold for in 1997,
Business.com $150,000
TV.com $15,000
Porno.com $5,000
Television.com $50,000
Men.Com $15,000

The same $270k could have gotten you every name I just listed. Why waste it on something as mediocre as payables.com? Sounds like a story to me.

I remember when business.com sold for $150k. That price range being spent on a domain name was absolutely unheard of for the time.

Best of luck,
RJ
