Buyer : Seems strange and asks for an appraisal

Hi,

I've received a mail for one of my domains, to the mail adress mentionned in the Whois and I think there are some strange things.

In the first mail the guy says he wants to buy the domain for his company and resell it later to make some funds. He asks my price. I answer I'm considering developing a website but that I may accept an offer half way between the domainer and end-user price, and ask him to make me a proposition.

Then he replies with a typically end-user offer price, but goes on talking about strange things. Like, he wants me to have the domain appraised by independent experts, to be sure he'll be able to resell later. He telegraphs the domain would be appraised higher and that I could increase the price, but that it would be nice to make him a discount.

Well I'd sell at his offer. And I certainly don't want to make it appraise, because I think he's the one who should make it appraise if he wants to secure his investment. So I was about to answer him to make it appraise if he wants, and make me a definitive offer then.

But this is very strange, I suspect danger. Maybe it's alright, but not many chances. Maybe he's trying to make me use appraisal services (he sends me to a thread with appraisal services and wants one of them).

What do you advise me ? His offer is really end-user and I know if it gets appraised by pros their valutation will be just ridiculous (and true) next to this offer.

Thanks

Yes and so is the Nigerian scam
Scammers will continue as long as there is any potential targets.
New Domainers (newbies) are prime targets.

Thanks for asking and reporting this. The email domains are also a clue in this case.

Scammers love new markets. I remember getting ebay spoof emails way back in 1998.

Yeah and these scammers are real idiots too or at least they take you for one. When I was a noob I got one of these scam emails and didn't realise that it was a scam. The guy wanted me to do a $70+ appraisal and sent a link to a forum post where he was supposedly buying domains and was recommended that appraisal system. Anyway, I did a cheap $5 appraisal (I was a noob) and when the name was appraised for something like $70 I offered to sell it to him for half that, but the thief insisted that I get it appraised for $70 from his system.

I had my suspicions about this Mr Driscoll before but that really opened my eyes to the scam - Why would I pay $70+ to appraise a name I was willing to sell for ~$30?

From "Winski"

Who the hell says on forums "Ok the 2000 is transferred into your account" ever heard of email? I replied for a while and said I would sell it to you even if the value came to 5$ as long as you pay for the appraisal. He kept ignoring me as I kept saying "You do the appraisal" etc. Then he finally said "LISTEN this is a common practice!" etc etc

I just came across this forum and this confirmed my suspicions so I told him to royally go to hell.

Hello,

I'm checking sites with domains for sale from time to time. By my opinion, bestpricecpu.com can generate income. What is your price?

We are working on software market. Reselling gives us a good income opportunity but it does not have relation to our main business.

Looking forward to do business with you.

My age old question is: How does is this individual/s always know to target "new" domainers?

Makes you wonder if they're trolling the forums.

In my case, I got scam email 2 days after I regd my first domain. I think they look for new domain registrations especially those listed for sale.

I'm sure they troll forums too but I got this message before I made any posts whatsoever on any forum.

My guess is they go to to websites like Sedo and copy and paste all the links and use a program to do a massive whois on all the names and automail them and wait to see who replies.

I was willing to sell my name as it was the first name I registered and I didn't think the name was good except for an end user POSSIBLY (even thats a stretch) so I would of been happy with 10 dollars. Just wanted to dump it.

They seem to target owners of fresh registrations.
New names are easy to spot by checking the drop lists or zone files.
