.pirate - A new, free domain extension via opennic

Kind of fun. Picked up Mix.Pirate

I stay far away from sites that require me to "setup" my computer with their code.

These people may be okay, but I don't know. One could end up loading up malware and other unpleasant surprises.

You don't have to "setup your computer with their code". There is nothing to install.

You "setup" your computer to use the OpenNIC DNS servers.

Went through a couple of pages to find that they own multiple other domain names also :
.geek, .free, .bbs, .parody, .oss, .indy, .fur, .ing, .micro, .dyn and .gopher and few more

And, I think only a person who has enabled the computer to identify their DNS can open their TLDs.

This, to me, seems completely a "fake name" or a "masked name". I don't think I will be using it.

Do correct me if I'm wrong...

nice to see them using a .me domain.

it tells you one word domains like i.pirate are available but won't let you reg them or the two letter ones.

Domainers have grabbed the nice stuff like forex, tap, nfc, mobile etc already LOL. OK c*rrency was free, some luck person can still grab exchangerate.

Of course party, politics etc are gone but politician is still free.

.so is shorter and Icann-sanctioned - it will resolve without any tweaks.

What if the registry owner could not collect enough moolah from domain registrants to pay for the annual registry dues? Extension folds up? What will happen to your .pirate domain then?

Just registered some NNN.pirates. If only they had a bulk registration tool...

It's not an ICANN accredited extension. It's an "alternate root" extension. There's no ICANN fee, and they aren't charging for domains.

These domains only resolve if you're using the OpenNIC dns servers.

I won't be registering any until they can be sold at Sedo or Afternic.
