Domain "for sale" for $1050 @ GoDaddy but available to hand reg everywhere else?

This is a little strange. I went to GoDaddy to register a domain that expired several hours earlier. GoDaddy showed it as unavailable to register but that it was available on GoDaddy Auctions (TDNAM) for $1050. I then went to Moniker and registered it for $8.59.

GoDaddy needs to fix something here... they shouldn't allow unregistered domains to remain in the GoDaddy Auctions marketplace. What happens if I thought my only option was to buy it for $1050? If I paid GoDaddy, what would they do? Register it and transfer it to my account? Refund my money and tell me to register it myself for $10?

I'm sure this is happening a lot more often than just this case alone... Is there a GoDaddy rep here that could address this issue??

I suspect that the domain expired and dropped while it was still listed for sale by the previous owner.

But, yes, something needs to be fixed on the Godaddy auction site.

Found this happening AGAIN today with another domain!

I had to register the domain through the GoDaddy App on my Android. GoDaddy.com still shows this domain as being up for auction @ $1500.

Surely GoDaddy can afford to remove AVAILABLE domains from their active auctions??

Happened to me in the past as well.

A 1-dollar Godaddy coupon came up. But i could not reg this particular domain at Godaddy because it says the domain is still at Godaddy Auction. I went to Melbourne IT and regged the same domain using their 1.99 promo.

it's always been like this, godaddy whois is not real time.

Do you know of one that is in Real Time? or at least
a little closer than Godaddy's LOL

OP, did you try to contact GD support about this? Curious for their answer

who.is is very good at real-time, auto-refreshed whois lookups.

This is no 'mystery'.

* Domain Name that was once listed on an aftermarket sale platform is let to expire.

* Original owner never deleted name from said sales platform, thus it's still showing as 'for sale' for $1050.

* You effectively dropcatch the domain, prior to Godaddy whois updating.

*The original for-sale ad remains.

After talking to a GoDaddy salesman last year who didn't even know that GoDaddy Auctions existed (his response after I directed HIM to that area of GoDaddy.com: "Wow, there's a lot of domains listed here")... I'm a little hesitant to waste time with their salespeople. :O

Andrew at DNW did receive a response saying that a solution is in the works and should be complete in the next couple weeks.

I'm bringing my business to Namecheap every time this happens now... not worth going through extra hoops just to give GoDaddy my money.

AFAIK the problem isn't caused by GoDaddy, but due to them joining SedoMLS. The blame should be with Sedo for not cleaning up their database and listing domains that have dropped on the MLS.

The blame is with both of them. Sedo should more actively check and remove domains that expire and GoDaddy should have a check in place for GD auctions listings to remove them if they're available. I mean what would they do exactly if someone purchased the domain through that listing - register it to them and pocket the sales proceeds?

Even though we certainly know what the deal is with those domains, imagine an end-user that searched a different registrar and finds the $1,500 domain available. They'd instantly lose all trust for GoDaddy.

I agree with you that GoDaddy could double-check if the domain hasn't expired, but any company offering an MLS feed on this scale SHOULD make sure that they list only valid domains. We all know Sedo lists MANY domains that have either been sold or expired, they need to get their act together and keep their database up to date.

I mean what would they do exactly if someone purchased the domain through that listing - register it to them and pocket the sales proceeds?

Good question. I guess they would be refunded after GoDaddy realized the mistake, but it would be quite a blow to their credibility.

I had this happen to me one day and found a way around this....
"pret-ty snee-key sis"

One day I did a bulk search for some niche... I dropped in about 50 names I wanted to see if they were available...
... The bulk domain tool showed me that 'x' amount were available
... so I added the top names I wanted to my list and figured I would use it on the next $1 coupon :)

Sure enough... The next $1 coupon came up and I referred to my list, I grabbed the top name on my list and went to register it - was pretty pissed - it was not available to register, but for $2,500 I could buy it through godaddy auctions

I knew there had to be a mistake... maybe I typed it in wrong, so I tried again - same thing....
... So I went back to where I started... Did another bulk search
... Sure enough, the name I wanted WAS available.

So I unchecked all the other names that showed up as available, and ONLY included my one name that I wanted n the first place.... Added it to the cart... And checked out without any trouble

The name, 'mCommerceCompanies.com' was now mine - and I saved $2,499 in the process
haha

Don't know if this is a glitch in the system, or an attempt to steal.... but try n remember this story next time and give it a try to see if it helps

Best of luck :)

Always everyone else's fault...
Never the monkey that lists a name and doesn't clean up their own mess...

Occasionally you see the post like this:

"Some idiot put an offer in on Sedo for $XXX and the name was available because I dropped it... so I registered it and sold it! Quick Profit.. ha ha moron.."

Usually followed by claps of applause and back slapping congrats.

It's SEDO's fault, obviously.

would had been lot easier if these big shots get some Noob to code them a simple script which can auto remove expired domains...
even the free domain managment scripts have these features.. why cant these Giants have it.. lol
