GoDaddy Auctions More Competitive?

Yes, I feel the same. Previous year I have won almost all the domains but this year I can see more competition and more people jumping in GoDaddy Auctions and paying a lot more as well...

Thanks for the info. I'll give GoDaddy Auctions another try as a seller. A year ago I've sold the only one domain on their auctions and decided to quit.

The expired auctions are certainly more competitive now than in the past.
Some of the sale prices leave me scratching my head.

I'm glad it's not just me, Brad. Yesterday I decided to do something about it. I stayed up all night thru the auctions, so I could counter bid on the domains I was watching/had bids on. Spent about $400 on 8 domains, about 40% of my monthly budget in 1 day. 1 domain I dropped out when the bidding reached $401 (went for $406). It was already double my comfort zone. I don't think I'm going to try staying up all night again. Too expensive. I just go back to making my bids and go to sleep. See what crumbs I get in the morning. Oh, I will be doubling my normal bid from now on, but I really don't think it will be enough.

I've been watching some and they are going pretty high, makes me want to list some for sale.

I think reason is that a lot of domainers bloged about that!

Thanks. Yep. I can see how the dotweekly and dnxpert blogs would attract attention to GoDaddy Auctions. But I don't think it would account for all the price increases I've seen across the board.

I believe that end users are themselves participating in GD auctions as many of the sale prices go way beyond what an intelligent domainer would pay. Many don't make sense.

Not all domainers are intelligent!

Can someone tell me let say there is a bid for $25 on a domain at godaddy auction and I don't want to miss it but will be in bed at the end of auction like someone said above. What if I put my highest bid like $500 and if the latest bidder before end bid was $50. So normally I'm the winner but do I have to pay $500 (higheest bid placed) or $50?

GoDaddy has proxy bidding, so your proxy bid is your max price. The system will automatically places bids until your proxy price is reached.

If you are bidder #1 with a $500 proxy bid, and the second highest bidder is $45, you would win the auction for $45 + minimum increment.

Thanks that is useful tip, so if you want to make sure to win you recommend bidding highest willing to pay and could end at low price?

I generally use proxy bidding more if I won't be around during the end of an auction.

In reality, GoDaddy auctions are so competitive the best way to win is jump in at the very end, at least if there are no other bidders.

Bidding early is just an easy way to flag the domain to other potential buyers. There is no benefit of bidding early.

Agree with Brad. But all my bidding is by proxy (except for the other night) because I'm usually asleep when the auctions end.

It does appear to be very competitive in the past year or so.

I also thought that GoDaddy would extend an auction if there was "last-minute" bidding going on. Frustrating.

The auction does extend if there is a bid with under 2 minutes left.

Well even though I doubled my proxy bid, I'm still losing most of my auctions by $5. So back to getting the crumbs

I had the exact same experience, losing by $5.

Godaddy appears to be really popular among domainers, so the competition rises.

I'm seeing the same. I just paid low $xxx for a domain that some time ago should have went for much less.
Regarding those domains promoted by fellow domainers I've tracked a few and all of those had a lot of bids.

GoDaddy is getting alot more exposure recently. They have their hands in just about everything. Recent poker tournaments are endorsed by GoDaddy as well, and some poker players have been buying up names to.

To be honest these blog post from domainers sucks because the bidding war comes from them I can confirm you.
Many domains as exemple:
Before post: 5 bids = $150
After post: 10+ bids =$2500

So if you are low in money even for not worth that much money but you want to get that name, you loose.
Before there were less bidders and less high ending prices.
Very frustrating for many but that's the game. You won't get a nice domain at bargain price on all expired auctions: snapnames, namejet, GD...
