Domain names purchased through Host Ultra may not be transfered and the name servers cannot be changed.

Please note that on the purchase page it said:

Please check carefully the above domain name is correct and that there is no spelling mistakes.
All domain purchases are final. Domains cannot be refunded, cancelled, exchanged, renamed or transferred.
By clicking the Purchase Domain button below the domain will be entered into our system for registration there is no going back after this point.

It says nothing about the domain name servers in that bit you quoted.

If they do not allow you to change the domain name servers...ummm...frankly that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard and really bad business.

Right!

if you check whois for the name they are listed as the owner! So I guess I am renting it! and I have to host with them

What a poor way to manage domains. You're paying regular price i guess? (From looking at their domain registration price) yet they own and control it?

You ought to make that a little more explicit in my opinion. What advantage do you gain. It seems you will just alienate your customers that way. I for one am not pleased. Don't you want your customers to recommend you to others. You would not like to be treated that way, I'm sure!

Still waiting to hear from them, be warned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Won't do much for you in this particular situation, but it might help someone else down the road.

Thanks for the heads up. Sorry to hear about your situation.

Ridiculous. :|

You know, people are always saying... don't register your domains with a hosting company, and I suppose this is a good (albeit unfortunate) example of that. Mgt, may I ask why you were using them for domain registrations in the first place?

I've been hosting with them, it's only $20 per year. I usaully use godaddy but they were a couple bucks cheaper and I was trying to save a little. Didn't read the fine print, semi- expensive lesson, huh?

Yes, unfortunately.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. I wish there was something we could do to fix it.

And, according to their policies you can't even transfer the name away? Geez... >:(

For a quality domain, I seriously doubt they'll let it expire. They obviously know the value of owning a domain name. ;)

Non-transferable? This is ridiculous and I assume this is against ICANN rules(?).
Well if you are serious about domaining just don't register any names there anymore.

so sorry to hear that dude, that really does suck

and BTW, thats a great name IMHO, and since he owns it, you have no chance in hell to get it.. unless for some strange reason he lets it drop.

I would contact ICANN and tell them about it, mabe thay can't do nothing, but its worth a shot.. did the TOS say you will be renting the domain, and not owning it ?

b/c I am looking on there site and it clearly says "Register your domain name for only $7.65 with Host Ultra!
Why pay more?"

unless regester can mean rent too >:(

Sorry to be frank, but why in the heck did you use their company and not a more respected registrar? Try Moniker--you shouldn't have any complaints with them.

Mgt,

Please find an available domain to register (com, net, org, info, biz) and send it to me. I will register it for you free of charge, thru the NP Domain Registration system, which uses a rock solid eNom back-end. Everything is easy to manage, and this will give you a chance too see how the system works.

This won't bring back your lost domain, but maybe it will help wash away a little of the bad taste left in your mouth by HostUltra.

Besides, us cheapskates have to stick together. :)

That is pathetic !! - Surely they are only supposed to be performing a service for ICANN - Is this even legal ??

here's their terms if you have'nt already found them http://www.hostultra.com/tos.html

How is it that they are listed as the owners? To not allow a transfer is bad enough, but to register it under their name is just outright criminal. Is that in the TOS? I couldn't find specifcs to domain ownership.

I am really sorry to hear what you are experiencing.

I have heard of a company that would help us to change the dns so that we just email them the new dns for our domain but they will give us access to the domain control panel anyway if we prefer to do it ourselves.

I have not heard about registrar that won't allow us to transfer our domain at all. And an explicit statement that you are renting instead of own the domain is really a shocker.

Hope that you will find a win-win solution.

Report it to Icann if they are infact a registrar, and if they are a reseller report it to the registrar and icann
