Domain investing typically slows down during the summer months. It's not just the domain industry that winds down; web traffic is mostly down too as most of the Northern Hemisphere head off on vacations.
There are always some exceptions to the rule, but generally sales are down and interest is down.
So how do you plan for a summer in domain name investing? The following is just my opinion/advice. You're free to disagree.
Firstly, outbound sales are normally not as effective. Who wants to read a sales email when they're getting ready for a vacation or just come back from one?
I've often found that during the summer my sales emails are very ineffective, to the point where I now leave my sales emails until September when the majority of companies are functioning normally again.
If your domain investing strategy is more of a churn and burn, flip 'em quick style in which you need to get sales in July and August in order to continue, then try putting your names into an auction. A NamePros auction can work well, along with a Flippa auction. Getting a lower value for your names at auction is possible at this time of year, with less bidders typically around.
You may be lucky enough to sell a few names at this time of year from inbound enquiries; domain sales still happen!
The summer can be a good season to buy some domains at auction. With less competition around, you may be able to snag a bargain.
Privately listed names at NameJet, Flippa, Sedo, and alike may diminish in quality, but good domains are still dropping, so with less competition around, prices could be lower.
Buying inventory at this time of year could set you up for a good winter of domain sales, so I'd advise to concentrate on acquiring rather than selling during the summer.
