Adding a search function

Is there any way to add a simple search function to a website without going through a company like Wordpress for the service?

I really don't know. I don't have much programming experience. Mostly just design.

If you have an adsense account, try adding a google searchbox.
I believe you can default it to search your site rather than the web.

I'd like to try to avoid doing one of those as the results come up in a Google page. I'd really like it to have no ties to another company and be able to come up inside our own site with our design. But I do appreciate the input!
