Any disadvantages to .ws domains.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I would stay away from this extension.. it's one of the worst..

If it is a super generic keyword than go ahead and take it.
These days, the TLD doesn't matter anymore if you are interested in the keyword

We just sold one for $580 and have sold a couple in the past at a similar price point.

So while it might not make you millions you could make a decent ROI with the right keyword.

And since they've been around since 1998 they make excellent development material since most search engines recognize them as legit, unlike most of the new gTLDs that will be launched soon.

Plus next year you might see the launch of .website, in which case .ws gains an added advantage.

Registration / renewals might go up on the 1st of Jan 2013 though - http://www.mwzd.com/domain-names/renew-your-ws-domains-right-now/

Sorry to thread jack here but .website? That's like naming your cat "cat" or your dog "dog".

While looking for key words and trying to stick within the TLD's this is what I could find.

But it seems like, people are suggesting, that a worse keyword under .com is better, not sure I get that... is it because of the SEO ranking of .com vs .ws

but how can you beat a great keyword?

That's just a brand and it is not the same thing as the example you provided.
Other TLDs are in the same "situation"
.net (network)
.info (information)
.jobs (jobs)
.travel (travel)
.museum (museum)
.web (web website?)
.site (site website?)
.shop (shop)
etc

I congratulate mwzd for making three .ws sales in the mid-$$$ range. But this is an exception rather than the norm. You can buy great keywords here for less than regfee. What does that tell you.

I actually like .ws domains (mostly because they are cheap). I have quite a few myself. But I think they are a losing investment vehicle on the whole. However mwzd's comments about .website being launched next year might have some help for .ws because .ws is much shorter the .website. But only time will tell.

@outlook There is not much difference in the SEO ranking of .com vs .ws. Two websites with similar pages/seo should rank close to the same.

@outlook You beat a great keyword with superior SEO/Content.

@outlook People suggest an inferior keyworded .com over the .ws because .ws gets pretty much zero type-ins/traffic.

Sales on domain forums are hardly indicative of the true value of a domain or an extension.

The three I sold wouldn't have received offers even covering my cost(s).

I agree that great keywords are available for regfee here, but that's opportunity in the right hands and with the right keywords.

And I managed to get GirlGames.ws

Not sure, if it has value, in reseller market as well.

.ws is good if you will develop it,but to sell a .ws extension kinda hard unless you have the top keyword which i believed are long taken.

Years ago, .ws was sold as a way to make scads of money.
Doubt if anyone did, or is doing so today.

I think in the below quote the following sentence is very interesting => Plus next year you might see the launch of .website, in which case .ws gains an added advantage.
Sad to see that pricing is going upa bit.

Of course, for development potential, .ws extension is good, most of the popular keywords you can find with this extension which is good for EMD..

Reportedly, domains have sold for as much as $2,000 to $2,800 for the likes of voip.ws, coupons.ws, blogs.ws, but definitely the exception in the last few years. Average about $1,000, according to popular sales reports in 2010 and 2011. Not much reported in 2012 or 2013. Supposedly, bigoo.ws sold for $5,365 in late 2012. Not many of reported domains are developed.

I have two top single keyword domains with eight digit goog search volume, that have had zero bids in three years.
Those names are $xxx, xxx+ with dot com, for crying out loud.

Like with anything else. demand is key. It's quite low, right now, for this extention.

How ? Even if .website becomes successful (which is not likely at all) it's still a different extension.
It's like saying .biz raises the value of .bz. Or that .mobile would make .mo attractive.

Simply, 'ws' is not an abbreviation for website that is understood by consumers.
But TV is a universal abbreviation for television.
That's why .tv is more successful than other rebranded ccTLDs.

In fact .website (or .ws if it's meant as an abbreviation) is redundant and pointless.
If I visit www.yourcompany.website I am browsing your website , not need to reinforce the fact. On the other hand, if I send an E-mail to [email protected]e it's a bit awkward. Perhaps you will buy a .email too, so I can write to you at [email protected] :tri:

Hopefully you get the point :]

Same applies to .name. It makes more sense for domain hacks.

Appending .name to a domain name brings no added value.
