dotMobi has created StyleGuides for web developers to use when creating .mobi websites. They did this to ensure a consistent user experience on the mobile web. You can check out the Style Guides here:
http://pc.mtld.mobi/mobilenet/dotmobi_guides.html

Basically dotMobi has 3 rules:
1) The homepage must be encoded in XHTML-MP
2) The visitor must not have to type in ‘www’
3) You must not use frames

..so it looks like no sub-domains. besides why would you want a visitor typing in more then they need to on a phone??

don't get so hung up on this typing in a long domain....

there are other ways.... the future is not certain

does anyone really think that the interfaces will always be the same?

in the next 5 years I guarantee there will be voice activated browsing...driven by phones for sure.... bar code browsing... taking a picture of a bar-code or pixel square (with your cam-phone) that resolves to a web page on your phone....

there will be ways we haven't imagined... :cy:

i saw a thing on tv where they had a quadriplegic hooked upto a computer that could read his thoughts so he could use it. He had a big thing drilled into his head that directly connected into the computer... So anything is possible.

I bought 2 names purely for subdomains. Although both are still nice names without.

OIP.mobi wanted V.oip.mobi and ile.mobi for Mob.ile.mobi

:)

I think you would want your home page to be subdomain free, but once you are clicking links, it really doesn't matter how long the domain is. Just say you had hotels.mobi... on the home page you click on a state or pick a drip down. then it takes you to say ohio.hotels.mobi where that sub data is located. You might not ever type in ohio.hotels.mobi, but you might bookmark it as a shortcut in the future if you spent a lot of time in this state.

Also, nothing says a .mobi site will be accessed by ONLY mobile devices. Since they will be slimmed down versions of web information, it might be nice to access them from regular computers. Based on this, I will probably visit weather.mobi instead of weather.com since it gets right to the point without all the fancy ads. Try it, it's kind of refreshing to get a basic quick loading website that's strait to the point.

it says (emphasis by me):
" 2) The visitor must not have to type in ‘www’ "

Based on that I'd say it doesn't mean you can't,

Yes subdomains will be allowed! Although when people are saying they will be useless remember that in future there will be search engines based for phones. So it ont matter if they are hard to type in!
