The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
PHPBB is absolutely the best choice.

Let me first get exactly what you mean, you need a torrent forum? What is that, is this just a forum? about torrents? or you are going to host torrents?
If its just a forum, you can start with a domain and a 2$ hosting from any host, but if its as host you will need a Dedi or a VPS at least, which will cost you a min of around 10$ per month.

If you need specific details please provide more accurate info

Instead of paying for your staff, let them be a part of it. That way you can create a forum that already has the skills needed pretty cheap.

People here think too much about marketing to understand how a forum works. If you have ever started a forum like I have, then you know it takes perseverance and dedication. You are lucky though...since torrent forums would be easier to market in the hackers/illegal download genre.

Just get your domain and hosting sorted, and if you got hosting through hostgator or godaddy, then all you have to do is go to their quick install applications and choose phpBB and install it. Once installed, visit www.phpBB.com and go to this section:

http://www.phpbb.com/styles/

Now from this area you can view the style demo's (although it appears to be offline at this minute) and once you found once that you like, you can easily download it and install it. Alternatively visit sites like http://www.phpbb3styles.net/, or http://www.phpbbstyles.com/ etc.

Once you have your theme the way you want to look you need to visit some other torrent forums and hack forums. See how they present themselves. They will have a specific post format like:

-------------------------------------------
Small thumbnail screenshot of application, software, ebook etc.

Then a short description follows.

Then the links/torrent links where you can find it.

--------------------------------------------

Add additional categories etc and you have a forum. For marketing just link up your forum with any other hack sites and forums and you will have it made. Make sure you get something like torrent harvester to find torrents or something and just actively post the torrents and let other sites promote your torrents. If you specialise in some specific hard-to-find torrents then it it will make things easier for you when people search for it on the search engines etc.

As far as moderators go... join a few other hack sites and then in some sections they will allow you to promote your site. Promote it and ask if one or two would consider becoming moderators. You shouldn't offer money unless you are really desperate to get them and same for users. Pointless to pay people to post posts at times, because if you try and get normal people to the site and they hardly see anyone on it, they won't stay around. Seen it happen many times. People delude themselves if they think this works. Maybe in the internet marketing world...but for entertainment sites and community sites it doesn't work.

That is my opinion and I have started several forums way back 4 years ago when all these methods weren't around and the old way of getting users were to simply go and find them.

Get MSN, AIM, SKYPE accounts set up for your admin account and add it to whatever forum/site you join and when people want to join your lists just add them. Spend an hour or two a day on these instant messengers with all your "fans" and you will have a following that will go wherever you go.

You need to be a social butterfly in essence really. There were days when I had 20+ people on at any given time and had to talk to people all the time. It made it easier when startig forums to ask them to join (which they did) and then start it off.

No money was every involved.

The good old days!

It cost me about $50 to start my forum.

$10 domain (or less if you have a code - lol) GoDaddy.com
$40 Hosting from HostGator.com

Staff came in the way of the users on the site, and they usually do a great job because they want to stay there and keep the place clean.

It was cheap, easy, and now I have sold it - lol

It would cost you very little to start your own forum.
Hosting from us is $1 per month and we provide forum software for free with instant install. All you would need is a domain name and the price changes on that depending if you get .com, .info etc...

I bought softwares, (4 different softwares, for the site, cost about 1k)
Ended up using only 2 softwares.
Had a script custom made.
Had installations and mod by programmers costing .5k
site hosting=$10
domain name 1K+
time invested months.

Return=? nothing....zero zip. Its now almost 2 months since. Originally in august 08 but then didn't work out, open the site again in Fed 09.

2 months now...No return yet.
Hired like 10+ people to post...nothing...so I cut back..still have like 3-4 people posting (paid posting)
Almost nothing.

tried adsense, nothing, just clicks.
tried on a pr 5 site banner advertising, nothing.
press release helps.

Other than that.
Traffic is growing but not many people are signing up or staying.
300 forum members so far (2 months) operation about 1/3 of them are paid members
the rest are probably bots. that spam the forum. I have to remove spam every week, like almost every day.

I am not sure what to do next.

Everyone's given great advice so far in terms of the price of everything. One thng that people always think about after the fact is the amount of time you need to invest.

I have a few forums and without thinking 2 hours can pass with me just doing the basics on a forum like deleting the spam, welcoming newbies, replying to PMs and forum emails and doing general cleaning and starting a few new posts.

It can be extremely rewarding - but especially at the start you'll need to put in a lot of time.

Good luck

For hosting, I suggest to choose hostgator.

For domain name, choose Godaddy.

For free forum script, choose MyBB.

For paid forum script, choose vBulletin.

Thats all true. Also, its hard to make money with it. If someone knows a better way to make money with forums let me know. Other than running ads.

I have started a new forum and all I paid for was the domain and hosting which came up to about $20. I haven't paid for anything else and I am finding it hard to get new members and to fill the forums with content.

if you go for open source softwares......... all you need to bother about is the hosting and the domain registration part.

You can start with Phbb don't start any software that cost you a lot. After all. If you got enough flow in your forums then you can start converting another software. Startup forum usually cost you aroun $30-50.

Making a forum is tough right now because there are so many out there. There are even ones that pay there members to post!

domain $10 at Godaddy and 5.99/month for hosting at Dreamhost

software and time are free if you do them yourself.

to start your own forum actually will not cost to much, but you must pay much more money to advertise it, to make it popular between your target audience is a hard job
