Microsoft will unveil this week the new search engine that claims to be better than Google, name is bing so I check the domain name bing.com whois and YES it's Microsoft Corp the owner.

So as you see short, memorable dot com and brandable are still premiums.

Sure that many newbies will reg all kind of bingsomething.com and try to sell on auction market place but what a waiste of time and money.

What I see is that most search engines use LLLLL.com or LLLLLL.com rarely LLLL or LLL. Why? I don't know! Also if you already read the story of Livesearch.com witch Microsoft made offer of 200k (if I remember) and owner wanted more (800k) so MSFT didn't want and now is launching Bing.com

microsoft have failed so many times. Can't blame them for trying though.
Who doesn't want to be the master of the Internet :)

I like it.

MSN search has been performing better too.

And they've pretty much taken bing.anything now. I wonder how many unreported sales in jan - mar 2009 for these names, I see the .in was sold on 03 march 2009.

I never cared for MSN. But at least they finally realized they have issues. Maybe we'll finally see some decent results from them.

I sincerely hope they do well also. I see Google as a monster that could possible get bigger and take over the Web. At the same time, they should have spent more time thinking of a better name than bing.

They're already there. G is definitely a monster. They've taken over the web, as far as the US goes... You are what you google; without google, you are nothing. They are the .com TLD of search. They win, the game is over, no matter how much money is thrown at building a competitor.

With that said, in the context of fighting against monsters taking things over, I don't exactly think that rooting for the Microsoft search project is synergistic with that cause. I mean, MS is pretty much the original 'monster'.
IMO, the only durable success they will see with bing is amongst unsophisticated users who might use it simply because they don't know how to set their preinstalled IE browsers to a new homepage.

Checked namebio, and turns out they spent $25,375 to acquire bing.com

It's not like they couldn't afford a better name...baffles me why they went with bing

I think thats roundabout what Google must have paid for Lively.com

Bing.com is a pretty naff sounding brand for a company with so much money, $80 to $100 million campaign and that's the best domain they can come up with :-/...is it an acronym for something ?

Begin Initiative Nuke Google perhaps ?

What's wrong with Bing? It's short, unique, simple, and impossible to misspell. I think it's a great name.

They won't compete with Google, however, and we can't judge based upon the name alone (example: Ask.com). These companies just say that they will compete with Google to secure investors.

I dont see anything wrong with bing.com. infact its very unique, short and easy to remember. People will get use to it.

what happened to bing.com? a blank page?

Bing

i think the articles don't address what makes bing any different or how the search compares with google, it sounds like they're just throwing alot of money at an underlying issue in what seems like a last ditch effort. Once this fails, and unless there's something simple, intuitive and very different they're doing from Google it will fail, I think microsoft will start cutting head count from this department

They seem to be buying up a lot of bing.com typos and variations.

For example, bingit.com, bihg.com, videobing.com, etc..

If anyone can take Google on, its MS (at least financially, Apple could with its innovation).
I do NOT like MS in general and I dont like their policies.
I use to love google, but true... they have become a monster.
I think its great that 2 monsters are battling it out, and it would be even greater if eventually their power is distributed in 1/2 and we see some good competition.
As for the name bing.com, If we dont think as domainers, its actually a fantastic name.

I hope so... I traded Webcrawler back in the day for Yahoo because it took less time to type :|

I don't think i'll go to cuil.com instead of google.com just because it it 2 character less. If cuil gets better results, then surely.

i use the firefox toolbar. Very rarely do I directly go to google.com for searching.

I think microsoft should better be refurbishing and re branding live.com instead of starting fresh.

They might do a lot more than just a search engine with "Bing", else they wouldn't picked "Bing" over "Live"

How has Google become a monster? The company has become the largest, most independent, and most resourceful and innovative companies to spring up within the new millennium.

Google continues to improve and offer free interesting services that help not only regular Internet users but webmasters as well. No other company - that has experienced such great financial and public success - has actually turned around and implemented more and more servers and features to help out their target market like Google has.

What other search engine has these tools and services?:
More Google Products

None.

Google was and will continue being the first of every innovation. It - to me - is the only company that does anything with its deep pockets to turn around and help accommodate their consumers needs and possible desires.

Look at its competition: Microsoft, Yahoo, Dell (AltaVista)...they're nothing. What else do they provide besides search? Google's really taken a different approach by understanding each and every visitor - through their array of free services and features - to constantly improve their web search. No other search engine has done a fraction of what Google has already done and continues to do on a daily basis.

Long live Google.
There is no Google killer, unless there is an open source collaboration project that will continuously make and support as many open source software, tools, and services that Google has to offer and will offer.

Edit: Just take a look at the link I provided and you'll see some of the amazing feats that Google has introduced to the new world.

GOOG-411, a FREE 411 service? This should have been created a long time ago, but low and behold, punish Google for taking an untaken opportunity to provide a free 411 service to its major target market - the US.

More than just web search, Google offers various other searches include image search, news search, US patent search, product search and so much more - why focus on the web when the web consists much more than just web pages? It really narrows down major services and such people are looking for when they search the web. People aren't just searching for content and web pages (hello Microsoft & Yahoo!).

Google Docs and Google Calender, amazing web-based 2.0 applications that really have introduced the term of cloud computing to the world. View and edit documents in any browser, as well as accessing, and saving - who would have thought of that? And now Google Docs is continuing to expand supporting creating/editing/saving PowerPoint presentations and more. No more hard drive failures (thanks to Gmail I presume with it's introduction of such large disk space, cloud computing turned into a reality).

Come on, what other search engines have anything on Google? The other search engines are just looking for the market. If they don't have anything unique, innovative, or resourceful to the customer like Google has done, they won't and can't take on such a glorious company as Google.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head.

Honestly, I think what Microsoft needs to do is hire those geniuses which make Apple's commercials and get them to poke fun at Google's "Do No Evil". Try to make Google look like the "uncool" choice and try to get a decent market share in that highly impressionable teenager and young adult market.

From a technological point of view, Microsoft has an almost insurmountable hurdles to overcome. Google has built a huge technology moat with Google Analytics and Google Toolbar. They literally know almost everything that is going on on the internet, with the data they derive from these tools (which are fairly ubiquitous) and can derive great search results and pinpoint ad placement. Microsoft does not have anything that is comparable and it shows. At this point, I have no idea what MS plans to do to overcome this tremendous disadvantage (I am sure their technologists having been working on ways to overcome it), but they will need some great technology to woo away Analytics users in order to use whatever MS provides.

As far as the name goes, I think Links would have been better :gn:-, but I think Bing will more than suffice, especially at the price tag they apparently purchased it. Their problem is getting great search results and great ad placement, and that remains to be seen.
