knol.com seems to be Dutch

I translated with google translator Dutch to English:

Post from knol.com 24 July 08:

On various Web sites (including nu.nl) is now officially read that Google now has its own wikipedia started with the name Knol. There are articles by professionals and put these can be appreciated by readers.
And that we move google can appreciate Clearly, the focus on, especially our domain, is again grown considerably.
It needs no explanation that we are not here to follow up, as in december.

NOTE: We sell steamcleaning equipment and do not sell our domain!

Seems like a Wiki but not totally. But I do think that next time I go on searching on the google for some school project, I'll get more Knol Links than Wiki ones. Seems unfair to Wiki.

Knol who came up with that name anyways?

BTW what level of expertise is required to write good knols and be featured? Can we use Online Pictures or should we add our own?

I just checked, and knol.google.com is already on the first page of a google search for the word "knol". right behind wikipedia. :)

There's a few sites using the word "knol.." in the domain - I wonder if google is allowing certain types of names/sites - the ones I checked out, had no advertising on them though.

knolstuff.com
knolus.com

:)

Its about time, I was wondering what was taking them so long to get into this market.

we'll quickly find out how "true" the google SE listings are.
Wikipedia has YEARS of service, backlinks and content ahead of Knol. If any topic shows up higher ranked than a Wikipedia listing, i seriously question the validity of Google as a SE.

Well, I just hope that steam-cleaning outfit gets properly compensated for their domain if in fact Google goes after it... It would be a shame to see them muscle it away from a legitimate business operating a legitimate website with their name.

Looks like a pretty cool service, don't know how far and popular it will get. I wonder what type of offers the owner of KNOL.com has received so far...

True but they sell themselves on sharing your knowledge ...

yet they can choose to keep the fruits of your labor with zero compensation.
Welcome to the SE biz... :)

There is nothing wrong with what they are doing. If you don't like it, just don't visit them. Everybody wins.

I would classify Google as an Information company now. It's well past being a search engine and it's business now is based on "information" more than good results. Their bottom line is what's important now. Billions in capital have to be protected.

I think you've missed the concept there... if everyone saw it like you, then there would be no wiki...

Add to that, Knol allow adsense revenue share which I think will attract a lot of people.

Interesting, according to a Dutch article today, Google offered the Knol.com owners XXX,XXX. But they declined the offer and are looking for a X,XXX,XXX offer.

They should ask for even more... high into the millions!

I think google is tired of giving away free traffic to wikipedia, and i don't doubt that "knols" will have a little help in google search results.
