They just dropped at that price guide to $95 from $150. Percentage wise I think that's the biggest drop I have ever seen at the site.

Does that officially ring the alarm bell for some mobi enthusiasts? $95 ain't so great if you have LLL's from sunrise. Heck...I am kind of sad since I own a DXD.mobi but what can you? And yes...many will say that the price guide is just a guide but it's one used by a LOT of domainers as an indicator of value.

http://3character.com/2007-october.html

That was it's high of $200 I believe. Also the $95 price represents the same price as of Jan 2007 which is just 2 months after launch. Sad news indeed but please...go ahead and find the silver lining as I am sure many mobi fans will.

Good night mobi. Sleep well.

Some seem to be forgetting what the topics really about. That valuations for mobi are dropping and drastically. For whatever reason they are.

As for LLL.com's being down drastically...lol.

http://3character.com/2007-july.html

A year ago they were worth 1/2. As a matter of FACT...3character.com has kept valuations of LLL.com increasing EVERY SINGLE MONTH. Net and Org have also been nudged higher from one year ago.

While sure we all like think there is some slowdown you have to see the difference between that and the bottom falling out. mobi imho...just saw it's bottom fall. LLL's are typically a great indicator of domainer value. Because they do not require parking revenue to increase in value. They are intrinsic to domaining.

Trends or whatnot...how can mobi enthusiast be enthusiastic about their domains dropping in value so quickly?

Fans continue to ignore bad news...rather frightening imho.

To me it's no surprise. Domainers who are clueless to the technology and methodology of mobile browsing snapped up loads of LLL and then expected to sell on with a huge profit. To me they have no value at all . The only caveat would be recognisable branding or well known acronyms.

There are no buyers for them hence the devaluation. In my opinion this only makes the .mobi stronger as the wheat is sorted from the chaff.

I've not read the whole thread, so I apologise if this has already been explained to the thickos, but here goes...

The current market correction - which is exactly what this is - was inevitable. There were many names regged 22 months ago by people expecting a quick flip for huge profits, and tried holding out for such. This was not the correct attitude to the market as;

a.) full awareness was always going to take time, and this is essential to bring in a level of end users (of generics) to prop the market.
b.) too many useless names were regged in the heat of the moment, that will never be suitable for the extension.

Expanding on point b.) for a second; there will always be a lesser number of names that are viable for the .mobi extension. This will always be a niche, although a sizable one.

So, a panic in the market during the last 2-3 months before renewal / drop, was always going to happen.

I have dropped a few names which at the time, I thought I never would, but, I have bought some better ones on the secondary market.

You can speculate that the market has dropped for whatever reasons, but this is how it really is; this is the first stage of the .mobi maket marturing.

Roll on early October!

I think we are seeing a lot of wheat separated from the chaff at this time.

As for the comment about circling wagons, I think you're missing the point. Namepros is a domainers forum, and has very few people talking about active development. When most of the mobi enthusiasts talk amongst themselves, we don't really don't talk much about values of undeveloped names. We know the market value is low. Why? There's little ppc available because of the lack of traffic to undeveloped names, as well as overall financial portfolios being down. You would have to be blind not to see that.

Instead, we talk about how we are going to develop names, and how to add value to them. We also talk about things like how some of us have revenue of over $1000 a month on developed names and how to build revenue on the sites. We talk about cross promotion and banner exchanges. We talk about whether or not we think there is a market for a particular product, or if a name fits a particular purpose to develop. We talk about how to make our sites resolve on mobile phones and how to fix ready.mobi errors. We share our traffic information, we read press releases and industry news, and we compliment each other on our work or critique it when it deserves it. We send names to auction. And yes, we get very, very excited when a big corporation starts to use and promote its .mobi because it means the general public will know there is such a thing as .mobi and that it brings spillover traffic and interest to our developed sites. Some people make sales, but most are working on development and building the overall brand.

We do all of this without being told "RIP Mobey" and other ridiculous pronouncements because our focus is different.

That is the source of the arguments here I think. You can't just be a domainer with .mobi, you also have to be a developer or hire one.

People don't want to do that, and it creates some kind of animosity that there is a tld that is not performing like the other ones. As long as that animosity continues, the mobi developers on this forum who are also straight undeveloped name domainers want to make sure the domainers themselves aren't causing the market to tank by their persistent bashing. So there you have it, an endless loop of "mobi is great" vs. "mobi sucks."

And that's because people think .mobi is owned by Mobile Oil? Or is it because people think .mobi is a automobile? Or maybe people think .mobi just runs on gas?

Oil prices are effecting our industry but mobi has taken a larger drop. Why?

imho the new ICANN news releasing unlimited TLDs basically devalues most of the non-CNO's. In 10 years there could be a dozen alternatives for a mobile web extensions. .cel, .run, .out or whatever

I didn't miss that...as a matter of fact I comment on it and totally agree. In the context that NP is a domainers forum mobi is faultering.

I agree and it's why I think for domainers mobi is dead in the water. It's going no where fast. I will continue to express that for development mobi is fine just like any other extension. Many people here have transitioned from domainer into developer simply because of mobi and if anything..it should be applauded. However that's not everyone and certainly the focus of this site is domaining. I believe active development is essential for a portfolio of domains to thrive but not everyone feels the same. Many people do not even have one site yet hundreds or thousands of domains. I have about 120 out of 550 of my domains developed. It's a task and not everyone is up to that level yet.

It has been great reading this post so far. There have been many different opinions posted, which is what makes this forum a great place to be. I am not going to comment on all the pros and cons of mobi, because IMO most things have been said. I am just going to post some interesting new information.

Even the heart of most computers has to start thinking mobile!
...That is why the PC industry's commanding chip maker, Intel, might do well to be alarmed by the computer chips being designed by Qualcomm, a maker of chips for cellphones...As the PC shrinks in size, it is on a collision course with the multifunction cellphone. Many expect the resulting effect to transform both devices and all the companies that make them...The new mobile world represents a special challenge for Intel, which until four years ago ignored the issue of increasing power consumption in its flagship X86 chips, which have been the PC industry standard for almost three decades...
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/30/business/chip.php

Why are they doing this?
Nokia said Tuesday that the Warner Music Group had joined its music service, enabling customers to download and listen to tracks on Nokia cellphones...Nokia users will be able to gain access to tracks from major artists worldwide at Nokia's music stores or through the company's Comes With Music program, which is expected to be introduced this year...Nokia, the world's top cellphone maker, is increasingly turning to providing Internet services for its mobile customers. It estimates that the global online market will reach €100 billion, or almost $158 billion, by 2010...The Warner Music Group chief executive, Edgar Bronfman Jr., described Nokia's service as "a significant step forward in the evolution of digital music." http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/07/01/technology/music.php
nokia.mobi

IMO everything that's good for the mobile web is good for mobi. :)
