Something fishy??

Ok mayb i am too skeptical,but...

Lately i have seen lot of threads by noobs who are selling domains free or less than 1$ (.infos) just to get Trader ratings as mentioned in the post.

As noobs you will naturally try to increase your rating so that people will trust you and start doing more business with you. But selling names just to increase Trader, seems fishy.

Is this the start of a new scam?? Suppose a scammer can sell ten cheap .info for 0.01$ with rules like 1 domain/buyer and get 10 Trader. And tomorrow if he buys/sells a premium name , You and I will check his Trader and if he has 10+ TR that too given by reputed domainers, you tend to trust him.

Also its not mandatory in NP to give the deal thread URL while giving a Trader feedback. So if you sell 10 Quad premium LLLL.com or 10 0.01$ .info ,its all the same in the eyes of somone who deals with that person again.

I think from now on we all should include deal thread when ever possible...Also may be NP should make deal thread mandatory while giving trader feedback?
Also the seller can always edit the post after deal is done. Its good for buyer privacy, but it has negative implications also.

Anyway please let me know your thoughts on this.

Ps: I am not accusing any newbies , just saw atleast 7-8 similar thread by different users in the last few days ,so...

I see what your talking about, I just bought a domain for 50 cents, and he stated that I must leave itrader which I always do, so I saw it as no big deal.

Could be a scam, I'll keep me eyes open, Thanks for watching out for us widedesigns.

This is why I try to view the type of deals the person has done. If I am going to do a $xxx deal with someone with 10-15 feedback I want to view their post history and their TR to check they are into that type of activity.

Alright, that's a really great method.

I will start checking their post history.

Thanks for the advice labrocca!

Yes good idea, also if its made mandatory to specify the range of sale done in the feedback like for example, xx or low xxx or high xxx or xxxx, it may help more.

If each feedback is made to come with the range of the transaction, it will also help.

I agree with you all, good point made there "widedesign".

I actually also though the same thoughts when I saw the threads you talk about, but when I didnt see the moderators say anything I thought, okey maybe its just me.

So thanks for bringing this up.

Best regards,

As labrocca says, it's definitely handy to view the member's post history.

Unless I know the member, I find that the post history (the quality of posts, not just the post count) is more important (in some cases) than the trader feedback (especially if there's only <10 feedbacks).

This is an interesting point though, I hadn't thought about it. As suggested above, report any member who is doing this - even if it's not fishy, it's unprofessional.

We'll have some answers on this soon I'm hoping. I've already removed several TR over this and am not comfortable at all with people doing this. "TR" means much more to me than 0.01 or 0.50 cent crap folks. This isn't Ebay - and lets keep it that way ;) No one should be able to just buy a Trader Rating for less than a Pepsi will cost you ....

Well said Mark... :great:

Let me also say :

If someone holds a legit Auction , And the opening bid is the final bid of 1$ or whatever - I do feel that is a legit Transaction. It is fate more or less and there is nothing a seller can do do about that (We've all been there I'm sure  ). But to openly try to build TR by offering items for free , 0.01 , 0.50 , etc ... Thats got the whole Ebay feel to it IMO ~

While newer members may not take our TR system seriously , There are many longer term members here that have worked to build up their reputations on this site - It wouldn't be fair to them at all.

Actually I do that quite often for new users with low value deals. Maybe more NP users should practice this. I leave something like this:

"great deal for a $x domain" or "Quick easy transaction in the $x range".

Oh and don't forget about deals for NP$.

"nice deal for $np's" or "good NP$ offer thanks"

I do that because I do worry about new users using ME for feedback and then scamming someone else.

Thats a good thing, i'll remember to do the same from now on.

Maybe if we had a dropdown in the feedback showing the range which one would have to select? This way the database could also segregate reputations based on the range of the transaction done, and display the same in like different values? This would be good for people doing xxxx deals and knowing that the other guy had done xxxx deals or whatever in the past?

This would need some development though.

Maybe some generic brand ? Or anywhere not using the US$ ? :guilty:

Good point ~

I do pick up 2 liter bottles of Mountain Dew (Pepsi products) from time to time on Specials though in this range :p

In the UK, you'd be hard pushed to find a pepsi (or whatever) for £0.79 ($1.60) each.. lucky people :hehe:

----

Anywhoo, as Mark says, it varies on what the seller says. If it's "To build TR" then that's clearly wrong.

I also find this to be an important point. It is, in my opinion, even more of an issue on other forums (where often someones immaculate and immpressive itrader is in reality only for postings somewhere etc) where TR is left for virtually everything, including covering your nose when you sneeze etc it seems....

i had not noticed domains sold for basically free (i guess i am a sucker to overpay! :hehe: ) but certainly think it is a redflag when obviously/most likely only looking to build up *cough cough* credibility on the forum.....
i have also always questioned whether $NP exchanges should get TR at all and agree that (if so) it should be made VERY clear that that's what it was, and not a domain transaction.....

This could be part of a scam, but it also could not be. Maybe he just wants some itrader...last time I checked there is not a rule for itrader to only give if the trade is over a certain amount.

That's a VERY good idea.

Deal Types:
Free
Trade
$NP
$x
$xx
$xxx
$x,xxx
$xx,xxx

That would suffice imho.
