analysis Ycombinator W22 and S22 name analysis

NameSilo
Watch
This is an analysis of the domain names used by Ycombinator W22 and S22 startups. Not a guide or advice. DYOR.

TOTAL STARTUPS: 573

COMMON INDUSTRIES: Remote, Collab, Wallet, B2B, SAAS, Biotech, Space Exploration,
Solar Energy, Fintech, Robotics, AI, Machine Learning, DeFi, Web3, Payments, No Code Development, Programming, E-Commerce, Security, Health (In rare cases, projects related to Food).

I have only categorized the .COM names, because I mainly buy and sell .COMs. You can easily categorize the .io, .co and other ones in the list though.

NOTE: some names can be put in multiple categories.

As you can see, 299 out of 573 projects use the .COM extension.
Let's start with made-up "brandable" names: pulppo, iollo, homli, etc.

Those companies definitely prioritized the shortness of the domain name (usually 5-6 letters)
over readability. Doing this, they have 2 major pros:
1. They are unique
2. They won't have to upgrade (in most cases)

Here they are:

Thanks for reading and happy domaining.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It is very practical. You just get the name that is according to your budget and vision within both constraints.

Just because you want to name yourself Cool doesn't mean it is the only possible name for you and you have to start with coolintl-inc.com until you can afford cool.com because starting with that ugly domain or an inferior extension reduces your chances to ever make it to that bright day.

If you don't have budget then go creative and name yourself something like coolia, kuul etc and buy .com for 2k to 10k range or hand reg something like cooligo (just making up, maybe not available, but you can find something if you play around)
Better option to put those $10k in the product at the start IMO

Yeah, you don't need a massive budget to find a domain that isn't terrible.

Wrong approach again.

If 10k$ is a lot, then get your second or third best at 2k$ or $500 or $10.

If your overall budget for sales, marketing, pr, networking etc. is 100k capitalized (not just at start), and you can expect that a great name can increase the efficiency by 20% then you should be willing to spend up to 20k for that.

There's no such thing as right or wrong approach, there are different approaches.

There's no recipe. Startups with bad names have made it and the exact opposite exists (remember Voice•com? Fast•com?)

Shit happens, life happens.

If you have an excellent revolutionary product, you can make it with a bad name. No doubt. But, it is still wrong to refuse the incremental value provided by a great brand name. And you do need to own your .com (or cctld for local) to make that brand your own.

So, there is such thing as right or wrong approach. You have to maximize the value and you do that by doing all kinds of incremental analysis, as well as doing risk analysis (risks of a bad brand) and its mitigation (get a good brand upfront and don't have to deal with possible complications including being the difference between make it or break it).

I don't refuse the incremental value provided by a great brand name, you read me wrong. I just say it's not a main factor at start, you don't need a killer .com.

Great rebrand/domain, thanks to the funds, is a way better option. And you can read some examples almost every day.

In theory this makes sense. The issue is that one word dictionary .coms are worshipped more than crypto and NFTs, and anything else (esp regged / bought by domainers) is rubbished as inferior because it isn't a dictionary 1 word.com.

I like the first part - one-word unique dotcoms.

Example of the worst naming: your Brand is Craze but your domain is thecrazeapp.com I wouldn't download such app on my device... The website looks fishy and untrusted.

Domains with get join hey hello with etc prefixes looks cheesy... Hey I got a reg-fee domain and created a website invest in my startup your billions.

❗ Do not launch your startups on crap domains.

I am a .COM fan, but many of these brands are terrible.

Almost every domain on the list says "settling"...Like it was not their first choice, but they just found something that was available and settled. It makes sense in a way as the vast majority of new companies fail.

If you are one of the few that succeeds you can eventually get something better.

Brad
Fully agree, some of them looking like they have not even spent 15 minutes to see what is available. I am not sure I will ever understand some of these startups willing to spend way more money on company registration, ads, overheads etc, but a good domain or online presence seem to be neglected in the initial phases.

The other day someone came to me with a strict 250 USD offer for a pretty good .com brandable priced fairly in the 3k range (only a Y letter added to the English one word name in a lucrative industry) and after some back and forth they went ahead and registered the .eu version. I congratulated them for choosing such a nice brand name and politely indicated we might speak soon as long as their project lifts off... 😉
