.XYZ: What's the status of this extension now?

Spaceship Spaceship

When .XYZ launched 3-4 years ago, then it was on the fire. And one word dot xyz domain like Porn.xyz can sell for over 1M or higher.
But now in 2018 What the status of .XYZ gTLD? Up or Down?

The problem is that .xyz isn't even a meaningful string.

To be precise, .xyz does not have an obvious general meaning, but has different meanings to different people.

To Chinese, .xyz has the following meanings that are originated from Chinese Pinyin acronyms:
1. Little Universe
2. New Asia
3. Believer
4. The Next Chapter
(Source: https://gen.xyz/blog/whatisxyz)

To other people including me, .xyz can refer to 3D (i.e. x, y, z coordinates). Some 3D related businesses are using .xyz as their websites. For examples, hlumatic/xyz (3D animation) and dimension4/xyz (3D printing). I own model/xyz and would like to target it to 3D modeling businesses.

I think without an obvious meaning may be a differentiation strategy that makes .xyz stand out from other extensions. Undoubtedly, .xyz is currently not comparable with .com and .net. But we don't know how this differentiation strategy will work in the future. The new generations and startups are open to new things and there is a possibility that someday they will prefer to use .xyz as they think .xyz is stylish and eye-catching, while .com and .net are old-fashioned.

I often hear this stuff about how the new generations and startups are open to new things, and presumably more open to new extensions but that doesn't seem to be true. .com is still the dominant extension by far, so I'm not sure what old-fashioned means. It should rather mean established.
Some startups use .io .ai or whatever but they are not the majority and many will upgrade to .com in due time. Anyway, .xyz is not their first choice. Honestly, it's not appealing...

Any random string could be given some meaning but it a stretch. For example .pw tried to rebrand itself as professional web but nobody is taking them seriously.
Chinese might register .xyz, but it doesn't mean they would pay more than regfee.

Classic pump and dump scheme, domainers are left holding the bag :sneaky:
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...

It's actually not dead Brad...I would say .us is pretty dead in 2018, but not .xyz :)

Disclaimer : I own 0 .xyz domains, but still, let's stay factual here...

I think the reason why .xyz doesn't get a balanced view on NamePros is because it's an extension that you need research to understand well.

The Chinese .xyz users aren't going away. It seems to be that .xyz will survive at the minimum, regionally in China. Given China's rise as an economic power, I can also see the TLD surviving in China's sphere of influence.

Every new TLD discussion often leads to ".com is king." Of course, .com is king. But it's also a very competitive market. If you want to stay afloat it's important to diversify your portfolio. It takes research and caution to work with new TLDs, but it does provide an income source to help you out. Who would say no to earning more?

I personally have 0 .xyz in my portfolio. But any good keyword in this extension can sell for mid XXXX in 2018, of course with certain probabilities.

One of the main values of a domain, when it comes to investing, is the likelihood of a sale at a given price.
Any domain can sell for any price if the likelihood is infinitely low.

Accoring to NameBio .XYZ has 1 reported sale above $5K in 2018.
There have been only 31 total sales out of 2M+ regs.

So what are the odds of selling a .XYZ for Mid $X,XXX?
It might not be 0%, but it is statistically close to it.

Brad, in your post above you quoted first part of my post, but in reality my emphasis was at the second part:

"So my approach to this is : if I can grab (drop-catch, trade, whatever) good keyword in xyz while it has standard 10 renewal, I will do it and will probably renew it few years in advance. I mean really good keywords, like homes, mortgage, loans, etc. Why not :)"

Basically, you can not do yourself any financial harm, if you drop-catch something like homes.xyz with standard renewal and extend 10 years in advance. Your total investment is $100, while you will ALWAYS sell this quality of name for more then $100 in next 10 years (If not, PM me, I will buy it, lol)

Is this possible still in 2018? Answer is definitely yes.

So I am not saying go crazy in this extension, or any other new gTLD extension, I am saying be very selective, and when you see great deal, take it. If you just say "dead", it does not help to anything.

I agree, but if the only value in an extension is a top 100 keyword then the extension does not have that much value to start with.

Even I would take a domain like Homes.xyz for $10, but that is not realistic example.

But there are still previously sold premiums that carry the higher rate on renewal, right? Or does this apply to all now? Thanks for any clarification from those in the know!

@Bob Hawkes there are three new premium tiers (with $10 renewals) in addition to the existing premium tiers (with premium renewals). If you scroll down to the bottom of the "Variably priced premiums" section on the page you linked (gen.xyz/premiums) you can see the other tiers. :)

I sold many .xyz in 2015-2017, but only one this year so far (Budo .xyz).

I will drop about 40% of my remaining this year.
