I don't adopt this policy as my name is quite common. The dot com is owned by a fragrance company and the dot org appears to have once been a personal blog.
But, I did successfully catch the dot net for $59 due to a tip by a member here and had 0 competition in doing so.
Prior to that, I purchased djwalker.com for mid XXX. You might think I'm crazy for paying that, but, you ought to consider that there are 16 dLwalker domains (including J) taken. So, it's a very common first initial with my last name.
Lastly, before the chip craze, I spent $2750 to purchase my initials (djw) in dot net. That was the most expensive venture with my "name" as a Chip wasn't even conceived as of then. However, BuyDomains held my initials and I wasn't getting them from them for anything close to resell value at that time ($600-$900). So, I anted up and paid the price. Apparently, it's now worth that and then some as I regularly get $5000+ offers for it - not for sale though.
I want to emphasize the point that my name on forums is my real name. In this world, you really only have one thing to offer people: Your word. My word is always from my mouth and I take ownership for everything I say and do, hence why I secured my name, initials, etc. My name is my brand.
