Currently I'm planning to develop a small bitcoin-based service and, as always at the very beginning, struggling with the name. Of course, I'm not going to buy a fancy .com for its purpose, so it must be a handreg. Just a month ago I wouldn't even be considering cctlds, but now, when I got familiar with domaining, I'm no longer so sure.

What would you pick and what are your thoughts about that?

If you absolutely must do a cctld then go with .io with it's strong tech usage and associations. But keep in mind, if you start to grow and get succesful, you'll have to acquire the .com or re-brand.

.io is too popular, all premiums are regged.
Also, the tld itself makes your name brandable. For example, bet.ws is already a brand - "betws". Of course, you can register betws.com as well.

I would settle for a decent short madeup .com if you think that's the case. Quality service/product can sometimes over come a less then ideal name so focus on a good service.

    Good luck.

In general ccTLDs are the strongest choice ONLY when exclusively (or nearly) targetting the corresponding geographical market.

Btw. You wont find bet. anything available. All top keywords are ALSO taken in ccTLDs.

Honestly, the question does not make sense.

You go with a dot com for a global brand, and a cctld for a brand presence in that area. There is no this, or that, it depends on the services of the brand and the geo scope of the services, delivery and target audience.

A global brand will always have the dot com and other cctld where it makes sense to deliver geo centric services that benefit users in those areas.

There is no alternative to a dot com, but there are ways to increase brand awareness and deliver services vi cctlds and ngtlds when done properly. Properly, being the operative word in the case of ngtlds. They add to a brands dot com, they do not replace it.

That is an awful name. Why suggest that?

The budget is the main concern. Of course, if I could I would go with things like x.com or dot.com.
Also, as I said, the tld adds up brandability to the name. It doesn't matter what the tld is if it's not .com/.net/.org. People will have to memorize it. It will be a part of the brand. bit(.)ly/bitly(.)com is an example. Till today I didn't even know that bitly(.)com exists. If bit(.)ly wasn't popular, bitly(.)com would be worthless.

I would suggest getting using the bet.ws cctld being that it's a one keyword generic.

no_url_shorteners is a good name, regardless of no_url_shorteners.

Many things make a great name, one of them being memorability as you pointed out.

Only you know your true vision for your brand. Best of luck with your naming.

This isn't a question anybody can answer ... it totally depends on the specific names .. .ws .io .co and .tv aren't really ccTLD's .. they are technically (to google) more general global domains .. but more importantly all TLD's are different .. and same goes for the term left of dot ... when you add both factors together the only way to judge is to compare all the names in question. Other important factors are audience, marketing budget and price etc etc

    Regarding bc.bet:
    Creation Date: 2016-03-06T05:23:13Z

    And bt.bet costs 3000$ a year :xf.rolleyes:

However, bet.mc, which is also available, costs only 36€ a year. And I'd say BET.MC is an awesome brand.

I was leaning towards a cctld from the very beginning. Now I got even more confident. I've found a very fitting word in a nice cctld. It's kinda expensive comparing to 0.99$ .coms but is still reasonable. I will not rush to reg it and will wait till the code is finished. Then I'll post it here :xf.smile:

If you can't find a Bitcoin .com, then I think I'd try to find a Satoshi .com as an alternative. Bitcoins have a fairly high value, so you may find people are betting in Satoshi anyway. :)

The thing is, my idea is very unique. Really, it's so simple and beautiful, I'm still amazed. Generic words like "satoshi" and "bitcoin" would be a bad fit.

Well .. then try to include the term "blockchain" .. I think that's the term that encompasses all the "coins"?

Blockchain is a fairly old concept, and really just relates to the record storing structure. The real revolution of Bitcoin was the decentralised storage of multiple copies of the ledger, and the use of cryptology to create the currency. SegWit introduces a whole new range of options, and I want to try using multiple signatures to perform an escrow functiion.
