Meh. Mobile payments have existed for as long as WAP technology has existed; services were just derailed in utero by the asinine "anti-terrorist-financing" laws in the US and Europe. Small niche operators like Safaricom's M-PESA have been doing it for years.

Am I the only one who thinks this will be a fraudsters perfect scenario? 200 million people walking around paying for things with there mobile phone..I can imagine there would be a way of circumventing the system and capturing this information for there own good. Maybe I'm old school and paranoid....but I can see this going really bad really quickly.

That's exactly the kind of thinking that made online payments a cliff face of a business to get into, Blake. Pandering to that kind of thinking is how PayPal managed to all but corner that market.

Besides, isn't cash a scammers' and fraudsters' paradise? All they have to do is figure out a way to get it off of you, and then it's untraceable! Egad!

I watched something on 20/20 I think it was
about the new scams related to this wireless stuff.

Thieves don't even need to see or touch your cards anymore, they can bump up against you,
sit beside you, or even walk next to you - there is a device that will scan your cards, and
passwords and you will never know the difference - the info is transmitted instantly.

I'll see if I can find a link or something - wireless cameabout to make things easier,
now everyone is gonna go back to bringing cash along

I actually like the idea of being able to pay for domains via my phone. If Apple comes out with a product that does this, I am sure the world will follow.

Everything is becoming easier nowadays and it is coming to help.
Buying things and paying doesn't require one to have money at hand but an electronic kind of to purchase whatever you want.
Simple world.

There will be a lot more of this, using NFC- near field communication -for what is called proximity payment. Someday your phone really will be your wallet.

I am kind of indecisive about this kind of payment system because on one hand I agree with Blake it just seems like you are asking for trouble and I feel like so much of business and commerce now is pointing to faster,easier and accessible anywhere but those broad terms leave broad wholes in the system.

However as domainers and it is probably good for us because the more real world meets virtual world the better it will be for domains and development IMHO. I probably will even eventually adopt the tech myself because after a while what can you do other than join in?

Every new security issue will delay mass adaptation of this. The latest one is with the iphone were spyware in the apps log everywhere you go. Someone only needs to hack into your phone to learn everything about you. Reporters regularly hack celebrities' phones now so it's not that difficult.
