Using MyBB and plugins, basic discussion of making money online.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Without an existing community, getting a forum off the ground has always been hard, even before the Facebook meteor wiped most of them out 15 years ago.

Do a blog and just write a few posts per day. If it's any good, you'll get visitors, return visitors and user interaction as comments.

If it becomes popular enough you can then add a forum, even transplant the comments to get it started. (Obviously nobody will sign up to an empty forum.)

Okay, so basically I'll need to first get it all ready and customized, then add a lot of posts myself, and after that try to partner up with another forum and use adsense maybe?

Sounds like it's worth a shot.

Do forums sell for any good amount of money? I was thinking about getting it started and selling it off in about a year.

The site is called MonetizeForums/com I just worked on it for a couple hours last night, just gonna work on it here n there for a few weeks an it should be good to go.

You will get spammed silly. Ask @Paul how much work running a forum is.

If you have great content to write you can attract people with that, example you could write about emerging tech, MV, AR, VR etc, there are many topics, but most of problems today is content scrapping, someone may see value in what you do and copycat everything or create a clone of your website even with a better name.

Give it a try and see how it unfolds, as a popular saying, nothing ventured nothing gained or no risk no reward.

Also what I learned on my own Forum is to be polite no matter of the situation, even if people repeat the same questions again and again, else you will scare everybody away like I did.

LOL That's not even close to what I said. I said don't do a forum. Even after seeing the name, a blog about how to monetize forums is a better (easier) idea.

Nobody will sign up over fake posts, unless it's controversial stuff about US politics or Covid, and why would an established forum "partner up" with a forum with no users/fake content?

Forums are understandably very possessive about their members/traffic and you can't even mention other forums, at least of the same type, on some forums, including this one, AIUI.

As with any site, I assume if you don't have provable good revenue, there's no reason why someone will pay good money for it.

Since you don't even have any real sincere interest in the forum you're making though, it's absolutely guaranteed to fail.

lol well alright, no I don't have much interest in creating a forum rn, just wanted to increase the value.

And people will buy stuff like that.

  1. Make it available free, there should be an account level which is always free
  2. Know how difficult and time-consuming running a forum is an have a strong plan from the start, because your forum will be attacked by spammers, hackers, black hats, criminals, and this will happen forever, so have your security systems in place to mitigate all risks
  3. Start by focusing on a specific area or angle within making money online, then expand if, and only if, you get an audience
  4. Get your technology right by designing for MOBILE FIRST
  5. Listen to your audience by constantly asking for feedback and incorporate democratic voting wherever possible, but all the while accepting that you can't and won't please everybody
  6. Be fair, do not take sides, establish rules and apply them equally to everyone all of the time
  7. Accept my respect and unlimited kudos @Clover if you even attempt to set up a forum, hahaha do you have any idea what you're letting yourself in for?

I mean I've thought about developing names with the idea that they'll sell easier and/or for more money, but it always ends up seeming like a huge grind, doing something you're not into that might not even make a difference.

A forum is one of the most difficult types of sites to do successfully, you really need to start off with some kind of community already to give it life, to be into the subject matter yourself and to be prepared to put in the time and effort to keep it spam and abuse free.

Even forums that get off the ground often fail because the owner loses interest or doesn't have the time any more.

A blog OTOH is probably one of the easiest sites to do, which is why I suggested it. All you do is submit posts every now and again, and comments, if you want them, can be handled by Disqus, or moderated if it's Wordpress, to avoid spam.

Don't let me put you off though, it's just my opinion.

Thank you for the advice. I use to mess around with MyBB stuff when I was like 13-14 and never stayed dedicated to it for more than a couple months but I can get things going a little bit, maybe.

I really just wanted to host a forum on it for about a year and try to sell it for 5-10k, but my buddy wants to make a good community on it with me. I honestly just prefer my other domain (MonetizeMB) if I were going to stay with a project like that.

Personally I'd make it a private invite-only forum from the get-go. That way it's a slower uptake but a higher calibre of membership which makes for a more advanced level of discussion. Namepros is a very rare forum where you get a cross-section of different skill-sets. That's why I like Namepros more than any other forum on the interweb thing. Bear in mind that most people these days are weak-minded quitters who need other people to do their thinking for them. How many people do you know who could survive if the power, gas, water and internet went off simultaneously? Hahaha it would be fun to test out. Anyway back to your forum idea I have a question. What exactly is your idea?

I honestly don't have much of a plan, but like I said, I like the domain name MonetizeMB better than MonetizeForums, so I might try to design this site a little more and then sell it, or I might bring more traffic to it and keep at it, really am not sure.

You are 99 % likely to fail. That's not being negative but it is being realistic. Have you any idea the challenge ahead of you? I mean you need a business plan. A forum is not a quick turn-a-round thing. Have you already cancelled your entire social calendar for 2022?

Strive for quality. Better to start with ten hiiiigh quality members ( and they can be high as well as high ) than one hundred loooow quality members. My advice is to approach a business faculty and get business students chatting. How are you gonna make it worth their while?

First, that niche is very popular and your going to have to bring something to the table to makes your different then other.
second, be prepared to spend some money on advertisements via facebook or other social because of the way social media is now days.
third some forums grow faster then others if you think 1 year is enought to build a great forum for profit then hope to it and be prepared to work with businesses in your niche.

My forum is VERY niche and even very GEO. Its 6 years old and I reply on very little social media marketing and mainly word of mouth.

Target business students. University ( college whatever you call it ) students. There's a real motivation there. A full-time motivation. It's not a side hustle for them. MAKE A FORUM TARGETING BUSINESS STUDENTS. There's your idea. Mate.

I'm not really looking to "succeed" with the forum, more so to just raise the domain value and let someone else try to build a community on it. But I have been considering doing it myself.

Setting it up is the easy part, getting people to join and be active is the harder part.

So it's a make money online forum. Why should I join your forum over Trendri? Simple question. You need to be able to confidently answer this question. Then I have another 20 related questions. See where this is going! Specialise.

I cant tell if your serious or trolling.

A forum is a great way to make money but building and time is what you need.

I think discussing other forums might be against the rules so I'll politely bow outta this thread. Already been sent enough mod warnings. Just make sure you target business students at college / university and give them a cool reason to visit your new thing. Without a good plan and quality members it's a spam magnate and a complete waste of time. Thank me later.

Did I say you said that? Please quote it.

You want to start a forum and you can't even read a thread.
