Why did my domains get very different appraisals?

Hey there,

I'm just getting started in domaining and wondered why some of the domains I bought got a very different appraisal at Sedo and at Estibot.
I got the following domains:

Everydaycrap.com
(adult name removed - wrong forum)
Stylewraps.com
Lollerz.com

They all got valued between $250 and $450 by Sedo, whereas they aget about $45 to $90 at Estibot.
I was wondering why this was. One suspicion I have is that maybe Sedo only looks at the words and not the age of the domains. Is this it?

Any feedback appreciated and if you have any on my choice of domains, that is great too. Thanks!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Appraisals are just that.
A guess.
Each service, including here at namepros, has their own way of appraising.
Now the auction places, like sedo, will appraise domains high to get you to list them.

The bottom line is, there is no way to 'appraise' a domain accurately. They are worth basically what someone is willing to offer for it, and what the owner is willing to accept and sell it for. The one thing for sure is on appraisals - there are many willing to charge (take your) money for an appraisal, and the ones that do pay for those appraisals, just threw money out the window.

I don't know exactly how Estibot or Sedo generate their appraisals but however they do it they are for the most part completely inaccurate. You can't rely on any of those automated services to give you any true indication of a domains value.

Your domains aren't horrible, the best is StyleWraps.com in my opinion.

Thanks for your answers. That makes sense.
Just to know, aside from how good and marketable the name is, the other aspects that make domains valuable are age and backlinks?
Thanks a lot.

Just remember who your audience is. Endusers don't care about age and usually not about backlinks (unless it is a lot.... and sometimes backlinks can even discourage buyers if the type is sketchy or they don't want them). They don't add anything to the domain NAME's value itself.

Only resellers/domainers care about domain age. It suggests that it is worth it because someone 15 years ago someone thought it was. However, I have seen soo many exceptions both ways that you need to be really careful with that. Backlinks suggest you might have traffic going to the domain so that you can make $$ on the traffic via parking or development. Backlinks don't usually give you much in reseller value - again, unless there are a LOT. Also, backlinks can often be faked/etc so they are pretty much useless in those situations.

So if you are more focused on enduser flipping, the keyword/name quality is far more important than backlinks/age. If you are going to develop/park, then domains with backlinks and/or typein traffic in industries you like can also be important in addition to the domain name itself. If you are looking at only flipping to other domainers, then you will care about all of the above plus age - but you will also be making the lowest profit on your domains and shouldn't expect too much outside or premiums.

I hope this helps!

Brilliant, Svede, thank you!

Looking at domain age is an old way of thinking and pretty useless if just limited to the age itself.

It has been said many times on this forum that an old crappy domain remains a crappy domain and that an old domain that is not indexed ( because f.e. it has been always parked ) or it doesn't have any backlinks is just as a freshly registered one for seo and ranking purposes.

80% of my sales are hand reg domains, less than 1 year old and also I don't trust of any appraisal tools, human opinion is more important for me.
