Why are some country endings renewal prices so expensive per year?

Hello,
I am researching good names for some countries like .se , .th and from what I can understand the renewal prices are the same as purchase price. So if I buy a domain for 33 USD the renewal cost is the same next year. Is this not weird?

The renewal cost is usually the same as the initial registration.
This is not weird at all.

If you mean some TLDs are expensive, you need to take into consideration that some are rather small, and do not benefit from economies of scale possible in larger TLDs.

PS: .se must be cheaper than $33.

ccTLDs prices all depend on what people are willing to pay for it.
