Hi,
Im trying to get a domain for a project. They annouced the project and someone registered the .com so they are using the .io for now. I am trying to secure them the .com. I found out that the email in the whois is wrong. The company that owns the domain says that the person worked for them a long time ago but no longer does and was given that email during that period of time. I called the phone number but it was not the person in the whois, I even go the answering machine once and the name was not on the machine.

What would be the best way to get the domain at this point, in your opinion?

There seem to be section WHOIS? on AcornDomains forum..(which states ''If you are looking for a member on the forum or someone by name post it here'') Never used it myself, but many members seem to be able to find who they been looking for in this way.

here is link for it:

Would be great idea to have similar section on NP and please correct me if I am wrong and there is one already ;)

You said "The company that owns the domain says ...": Ask company how much they want to sell the domain to you ?

It is a .com so I dont think there are the same rules as a .co.uk
You said "The company that owns the domain says ...": Ask company how much they want to sell the domain to you ?
Example : I want to buy ABC123.com , the email in the whois is [email protected] so I call XYZ and ask about John and they said that he has not worked there for 12 years and that he used the email address back then.

I still don't understand what you want to say. You said the company which OWNS the domain so when i read that it says to me you know company X is the owner of domain Y so call them and ask if they want to sell it. If an email in the whois not working so be it, call them, fax them, write them a letter, google them etc :)

Or am i missing here something ? If so just correct me :)

PS: I report to ICANN which will cause the registrar to enforce correct WHOIS details.

Are you saying that XYZ company owns the domain and that their contact person for the domain no longer works there, or are you saying that it is privately owned by an individual who just happened to use the company email address for the whois record?

Btw, it really works, if you open a ticket with ICANN concerning bad whois they will contact the registrar to enforce proper whois details. I know from experience. This after trying all the other ways ofcourse.

Sorry for the confusion I mean
it is privately owned by an individual who just happened to use the company email address for the whois record

I don't know what you've already tried, but I would do some of the following:

-- look up the domain on archive.org and screenshots.com. If there was a website up at some point it might include contact info or additional clues about how to find the person.

-- google the email address in quotes ( eg "[email protected]" ). If the person has used that email address elsewhere you might find an ad or a forum entry that includes a different phone number than the one you have. If that doesn't yield any results do the opposite -- google the phone number in quotes to see if you can find a different email address they've used. Lastly, google the person's name in quotes along with the name of the city or state to see if you can find them popping up elsewhere with a different number or email address.

-- if the person is in the US, try searching for their name on peoplefinders.com . I've had occasional luck tracking someone down on that site. They'll show you a list of people with matching names and the history of city/states they've lived in along with the names of relatives and the age of each of the name matches. That might provide further clues by itself, but if you find someone that is a good potential match you can also pay for a report that includes the most current contact info of the entire list of matches for just $1 or $2 total.

Good luck to you.

If the person using company email address. Just tell the company to sell you the domain name. They have access to the account.
