Prices seem to vary between providers, but who do they actually buy the domain name from? And if the prices they charge are just for their services in procuring the name, is it possible to apply for a domain name yourself without incurring these costs?

even i am interested in knowing this.

what i understand is , about 0.25 cents approx goes to icann as fees or something and the rest goes to the service provider who is selling and from where you arew buying the domain.

please someone put light into this.

the bulk of it $6+ goes to whomever runs the registry, and the other dollar of profit goes to the registrar. the cost of becoming an accredited registrar is relatively high, and chances are you that you aren't running that large of an operation.

Yes the "wholesale" cost of most domains is about $6, but I think it's higher now. The difference in cost between different registrars is generally just more profit for them, although some do offer more services than others.

And remember that when you see prices at places like register.com or DirectNIC that charge $15-$30 a year.

So, it's like:

Registry (ex -R) charges Domain Registration Provider: $6 Approx in bulk or $7 Approx for 1

Domain Service Provider ex- D charges $7 in bulk and $ 9 in single or few domains

So, D will pay R $6 for rach domain booked in bulk and keep rest as profit to run its services.

I hope my understanding is right.

Also, then where does the ICANN fees is included in registry charges charged by R or it has to be seperately charged by D

Thanks Chris / Shockie

Keep in mind that the prices are variable:
+ $0.20 ICANN Accreditation Fees (variable)
+ $6,86 .com ; $4,98 .net , $6,65 .org Verisign (variable)
= 7.06 Total pr. .com domain name.

The registrar you sign the domain name with get all above that.

Additionally the registrar also has to pay for the ICANN Accreditation:
+ $4.000 yearly ICANN Accreditation Fee
+ $1.500 yearly ICANN Variable Fee
+ $500 insurance
= $6.000 Total Yearly
