I've grown tired of some of the site's elements and am in the process of picking a designer (via these boards, actually) to give it a facelift. So any suggestions I get here may make their way into the new design.
(FYI: for various reasons, I was INTENTIONALLY going for a bit of an amateurish/do-it-yourself feel; e.g. i didn't want the page to look TOO corporate / professional / slick.)

Well, here's the thing. if you're already aiming at an overhaul, then there's not much to evaluate or look at right now. Granted, we could make suggestions as to what we'd like to see. However, there are a boatload of talented designers here on NP. I'd simply go with what you'd feel comfortable with. Against your initial idea, i'd still recommend to go as professional as possible. Unless you're target group is the little hobby/backyard player, your aim should be the ones that watch the players on the WPT - yet, in the end, these are professionals. Thus, your design should represent that.
Start getting creative with your project description. Incorporate elements that most other poker sites don't have or improve upon existing concepts. From RSS feeds to embedded video (WTP), referral programs, or even live play, the field is wide open.
