Thanks for checking out my post. I've had the same .com since 1998. It's a 3 character .com.
If the rarity of a 3 character .com domain commands value, and there are over 17,000 possibilities, how many 3 character.com domains are possible that make up an emoticon? Let's estimate a high number like 500. Let's estimate another high number on how many would agree on what the best choice would be, say 80% would agree. What would the value be of that emoticon that is a .com

How do you figure 17,000+? There's 17,576 three-letter combinations, but can't 3-character domains also contain numbers and dashes, which increase the total possibilities to 50,653?

Have you looked at sales history or asking price for similar domains?

The first "emoticon" domain that came to mind was 8-D.com (registered in 1997)... Is that a correct example of a three character emoticon?

8-D.com looks to have an asking price of $5.5k according to the GD landing page and looks to have closed at GD auctions for $230 in 2022.

Though, other 3-character domains such as, L-L.com tend to wholesale at higher prices than N-L.com

Is this a riddle?

I'm hoping it is!

My bad on the amount of 3 character domains. I own 8-1.com. I'm surprised at the low value put on it by the industry. It's possibilities as an animated character recognized by all walks of life and mnemonic properties for any keyword subdomain should make it worth millions. Domain appraisers seem to not recognize it under those lines but rather see it as a low value domain because it has a hyphen. A hyphen lowers value when used between key words. In 8-1.com though it's clearly a nose. Id think of rarity adds value, 8-1 is the best choice for a face and the rarest 3 character domain possible. I'm more of less looking for affirmation from the domain discussion community.

TIL 8-1 is an emoticon (supposedly). Congrats on holding it since 1998, but I think there were better names available to register back then... :xf.rolleyes: Today, I might register it as a collectible if I didn't have any other three-character domain, but purchase for anything above $xx? Unlikely. But that's just me.

One more thing, I have 81 and 18 in some TLDs and I got a few inquiries from Chinese investors. For Chinese, numbers have special meanings and 8 is especially auspicious. Maybe seek value in that?

Truth for me is applied logic based on validation of claims.
Claim 1: rarity increases value
Validation: the fewer the characters the higher the value.

Claim 2: the basis for the domain name system was to bring mnemonic properties to random numbers used to designate a url.
Validation: branding of biz names and existence of words like "cars" or "phones" are easier to remember random numbers.

Claim 3: words like "cars" and "phones" are so easy to remember that their value can be seen as higher than if they were mixed with other words.
Validation: cars.com was valued at over 817 million dollars

Claim 4: when combining claims 1,2 &3, 8-1 is the best choice for a face out of the rarity of faces that exist, and because it's a face more than it is a number or word when presented as a face it has the highest mnemonic property possible which is the whole essence for domain names, and it can be seen as more recognizable than any url that exists when considering every language as well as in the eyes of the young who haven't learned how to spell and the illiterate who just cant spell.
One can say 8-1 should be able to get more web traffic than any website that ever existed with the right kind of marketing if course and can funnel people to a multitude of key words where they can find anything they desire in one unforgettable place.
So in seeking truth, 8-1.com is the most valuable name on earth.

Seeking truth in a world where people are afraid to use logic is like going to see the funniest comedian in the world where everyone is afraid to laugh but you and when you do they will all call you crazy

It's an emoticon but almost all valuations will see it as 8 dash 1 and appraise it accordingly.

It's a pretty good domain i think, I would hold onto it.

FWIW: ChatGPT recognized it as an emoticon, but google gemini saw it as a mathematical expression.

The AI is still learning how to use imagination within defined parameters making up characters into an abstract vision where new visions can be seen. Between that and recognizing interpretations of images within anything it considers as art by the original beholder of such image and it looks to be different in turn distorting locations and existence of eyes nose and mouth. Sometimes I see the AI renditions as disturbingly abstract too

It seems like you are trying your best to sell your domain and justify the value that you perceive it has instead of trying to understand the what other people are saying its value is. It is not the truth but the social consensus, from which it derives any value it might have, that you should be after. That is, unless you plan on selling it yourself... haha. Let me add, I live a pretty techy lifestyle and have for most of my life, yet would not have identified '8-1' in '8-1.com' as an emoticon. I see it now after you pointed it out, but it still does not increase its value in my eyes. It is possible that many others also struggle to identify it as such. Even if everybody were able to identify it as such, does anybody use it as such in convesation anywhere ever? I suspect its use is extremely limited. Anyways, my intention is not to hurricane on your parade, so... I wish you the best of luck with your domain.

I live in the northern California mountains, my first aim would be to help others around me and repair and replace what a forest fire destroyed. Then of course go to Disneyland with the woman I love, and then focus on making more money in technology to help people become more self sustainable.

I agree, with the view you see it as now, but if 8-1.com had arms and legs and spoke and was animated and taught and entertained and you tried to think of what other .com can do that visually, you would have no choice but to say, 8-1 is the best choice for that.

I get your perspective. You have a 26 year old domain. At the least you should gain appreciation from the age alone.

Several times I thought about purchasing an IDN domain, specifically for an emoticon. I also thought about WEB3 which also allows you to have an emoticon for an address. You're correct there's very few ways to form an ASCII emoticon.

The real challenge is to publicize the finite number of ASCII emoticons.

This is strictly IMO,

URL's will become progressively simplified. 🧀🎂 (self explanatory)
I easily see google maps allowing you to type 🍣 and get 50 different sushi bars as a search result.

I would list your domain with a description. To the casual observer it looks like 8 minus 1dot com. Instead of 🙄😳.

The flip side is how many people sign their text or emails with ASCII art when you can do this 🦁🔛🔝🏈.
