I'm a US citizen buying a .CA domain on NameCheap. As I'm checking out, it's now asking me the "legal type of registrant contract." What the hell is this?
And what is this trademark number they're asking for?

as you're not a Canadian citizen, they're probably asking for a trademark to prove that you meet the canadian presence requirements for registering a .ca domain.

Wonderful. After reading through all that mumbo-jumbo, it seems as though a non-Canadian citizen needs to have a partner/s who are Canadian citizens to qualify.
don't get a .ca domain if you don't have any Canadian presence. The .ca registry regularly checks and suspends any domains found to be in possession of non Canadian owners.
