This is such a common question among domainers due to the many different approaches out there. Based on my experiences there are 2 main methods that proved to be very effective, using a broker and placing the domains on auction sites/market places. I go into details in a post I wrote.

thanks for the post Will - great info. could i just ask please - is hanging a for sale sign on your domain the same as parking it up with a company & having an inquiry form there?

You are welcome and yes exactly that. In my case I put my sites in Bodis.com and have it forward to the inquiry form so people can just email over offers if interested in the domain.

Am sorry I dont want to be negative here but there is some stuff that annoyed me about the article and I hope you see this as constructive feedback.

1. You mentioned your first sale with a broker but you didnt mention the list of brokers you trust or work with, therefore i dont see it as helpful.

2. Marketplaces,
you have probably heard of sites/market places like Flippa, Godaddy Auction, NameJet, Sedo and many more. For the next 3 domains we sold, we decided to take advantage of some of these market places and also one sale ended up coming from someone reaching out to us (inbound inquiry).
I would see more help if you shared the "strategy" you used selling on those marketplaces as you mentioned yourself. "you have probably heard of sites like godaddy, flippa and so on. What i would consider useful info is things we or beginners dont know about for ex. Did you add reserve price? did you buy any upgrades and so on.

3. You mentioned selling on namepros and your sharing the article on namepros. Probably people who are using namepros knows they can list domains on it!

4. There is a link for another article inside your article with the following header
How We Flipped A Namejet Pre-Release Domain For 10x Profit In 5 Days (Sort Of)โ€ฆ

I read that one too and for me it seems like a misleading header as the result of it was that he got an inquiry from the buyer?!

Again am just trying to give honest feedback as after reading both articles i did not learn anything new. this is just my opinion though and i hope it helps.

Thanks for all the feedback! Since Will and I work together as well as both run the blog, I'll help out here.

how many domains you have sold?

I don't have an exact number because I do not have my excel sheet up (not home at the moment) but I know its between 10-15 domain names. May not sound like many but we try to stay away from doing things like buying for $5 and selling for $20. It's not our strategy and we would rather hold off for a larger sale that's worth our time and effort.

We are still fairly new to the domaining scene but hopefully some of the things we talk about could help other people in some way.

Feedback is great. Don't feel sorry, it is what will make us better.

Well, yes we did not want to mention the specific broker because we did not feel like throwing them under the bus for charging a high fee. We agreed to the fee when we agreed to list it and we sold it. Sucks but you live and learn. Not a big deal. Just make sure you READ the agreement and understand it when you want to work with a broker. There are a lot of brokers when it comes to domains. If you search on google you can find highly reputable companies that will broker your name, if your name is worth it of course. Will mentioned the brokering option to start the article because its the first way we ever sold a domain name when we had NO idea what we were really doing.

I would see more help if you shared the "strategy" you used selling on those marketplaces as you mentioned yourself. "you have probably heard of sites like godaddy, flippa and so on. Ok makes sense. Should have dug a little deeper into this. Well when it comes to Godaddy we've had success with Make offer/counter offer where our initial offer price is the min $20 and then when we get an offer, we go from there.

Also, we've tried Godaddy auctions as well and paid for the featured listing ($19 I believe) and sold a domain through auction that way.

For flippa, prior to doing domaining we did sell websites on there. The platform looks great but if you are listing a domain name on their that isn't "premium" or whatever you want to call it, you should think about paying for some of the extras but it could get pricey.

Another thing we do that Will did not mention is whenever we have an auction going for a specific time frame, make sure you are promoting it externally on niche related websites. I don't see many people talk about this but I see the "experienced" people doing this.

For example, if you have an auction running on Flippa you want as many eyeballs as you can on that auction. So what you can do is visit a site like Namebio and pay to have your auction featured on their website. It's will more than likely bring more eyeballs to your domain name auction.

I mention namebio because they are the only site we advertised on and saw a nice boost in a few of our auctions from it. It's an investment to advertise but could be well worth it.

3. You mentioned selling on namepros and your sharing the article on namepros. Probably people who are using namepros knows they can list domains on it!

LOL. Well the article could possibly be found through the search engines (like google, bing, etc.). We also share it on social networks. We can't assume a person who finds us through another source knows what Namepros is and also knows you could run domain auctions on here.

I read that one too and for me it seems like a misleading header as the result of it was that he got an inquiry from the buyer?!

I don't understand this one. The title is pretty much exactly what happened. We won a pre release domain name auction on Namejet. After 5 days of having the domain name in our ENOM account, we got an inquiry from the parked page contact form. We had a banner on our site that said "this domain name may be for sale". Someone clicked it and emailed us that they wanted to buy it.

We then agreed to sell it for a specific price (a little over 10X what we paid for it), BUT then found out about the 42 auction lock. The buyer agreed to wait the 42 days until we could push it to his Enom account.

We break it down in this video. Pause it at the start and read the disclaimer.

Hope I was able to clarify a few things! Thanks for the feedback though! In future post, we will break down a lot of more details on the little things.

Keep doing what your doing. You two never claim to be experts and the stuff you document and then share while you're learning it... it's good, entertaining stuff. Sure add some more details but keep it light.
