If you look at .eth sales, while the numbers may look good, it comes at a registration fee of $640. That's a huge registration fee without the gas. Apart from this, you have to pay the following fees:
  • Registration fee
  • Gas fees
  • Listing fee (optional/conditional)
  • Price change fees (optional/conditional)
But the good part is, it is a one-time investment. You own it forever unless you sell it.

Is it worth investing in .eth and other web3 extensions? Based on the sales and investment (given that we don't have to renew), owning 5-10 good names doesn't look like a bad idea.

Not true. They need to be renewed.

How much will the yearly renewals cost?

Yearly renewals cost $5/year for names that are 5 characters or longer. 4 character names cost $160/year, and 3 character names cost $640/year. Fees are paid in ETH. The ETH/USD exchange rate is set by the Chainlink ETH/USD oracle.
