German automaker Volkswagen AG’s U.S. unit confirmed Tuesday it will rename its U.S. operations as “Voltswagen of America” as it shifts its focus to electric vehicles.

The revised name takes effect in May and the announcement came after several outlets on Monday reported on a draft release mistakenly posted on the automaker’s U.S. website.

“We might be changing out our K for a T, but what we aren’t changing is this brand’s commitment to making best-in-class vehicles for drivers and people everywhere,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Voltswagen of America in a statement.

A bit too early for Fool's Day news?

Best way to compete with Tesla & Lucid in the US:

1. Go full woke.
2. Dilute your near-century old brand most people can't spell.

That'll show'em!

Well, usually when someone starts misspelling their own name at such an old age, it's not a good sign...

I still think it's an April Fool's marketing ploy. Otherwise they should fire whomever came up with that.

If they rebranded to Volt, or better yet, just launched a new brand for EVs and eventually retire the old brand, it would make sense. But that?

It looks like VW UK has been using Voltswagen since 2019.

We know, 66 is an unusual age to change your name, but we’ve always been young at heart. Introducing Voltswagen. Similar to Volkswagen, but with a renewed focus on electric driving. Starting with our all-new, all-electric SUV the ID.4 - available today. #Voltswagen #ID4

66?
They're almost 90.

"Media outlets, including CNBC, reported it as news after it was confirmed by unnamed sources within the company, who apparently lied to several reporters."

Contemporary reporters are like pelicans, they swallow everything without giving it a second thought. "It must be true, because the anonymous source said so." And as the old saying goes, you can't trust the pelicans...

However VW's ploy to exploit gullibility of the media for marketing purposes might be a bit shortsighted...

Of course it's not true. However even if it was, reg'ing TM names is still bad form and a black eye on our industry.

Happy April Fools

Peace,
Kenny

LOL Kenny.

While I see no current trademark applications for "Voltswagen" I agree with your sentiment.

forget it
That was just a joke. I don't speak german. I have no idea if it even make sense. I think BMW probably won't be famous for its EV production. But who knows.
