New domain continues to grow in China.

.VIP is proving to be a winner for MMX (Minds + Machines).

The company announced today that it already has $5.5 million in sales (wholesale) of .VIP domains after three weeks on the market.

It paid $3.0 million to win rights to the domain in an ICANN auction. Not a bad payback period.

Over 400,000 .vip domain names have been registered and all have been paid registrations. MMX CEO Toby Hall commented:

The exceptional take-up we are seeing of .vip is being achieved without using a freemium strategy or equivalent to boost numbers – the latest surge coming from standard name registrations bought through the registrar channel. This bodes well for renewal rates and the long-term reputation of the domain. We very much look forward to the ongoing growth of .vip billings.

While most of the demand has been in China, .vip also has some demand in the West. I pre-ordered about ten domains at GoDaddy and all but a couple ended up in auctions. I now own Florida.vip, Austin.vip and Backstage.vip.

Surprising how you almost always feel the need to pipe in with a negative comment about new TLD's - Could it be that it's a defense mechanism and you feel the need to put people off new tld's as much as possible because MAYBE you are one off the dinosaurs of the domain world who are actually terrified that their aged .com portfolio is now at risk of depreciating in value because off SOME (not all) of the new TLD's.

Economics 101 - The rule of supply and demand -
When our options were limited to .com / .net / .info / country TLD the simple fact of the matter was if you owned good domains in these TLD's they were worth a small fortune.. the Demand far outweighed the supply. Yes off course .com's still reign supreme BUT the fact is now that their are alternatives it gives people/buyers the luxury of choice, they don't have fork out
$200 000 for a domain like, lets for example DivorceLawyer.com / net / info etc..... now they can consider spending $4000 on something like divorcelawyer.online - sure some will still want the .com but some will rather go for the .online and spend the other $196 000 on marketing their business. Having this luxury of choice basically means that SUPPLY has increased to help meet the demand. In time that $200 000 .com domain will depreciate.

No offense, but 'demand in the West' he surely means demand from speculators. Who is going to buy those 400K .vip domains ? End users ? Where ? Remember, without buyers these names are worthless.
He did like so many domainers. Bought a few .vip like you would lottery tickets. Yeah right another domainer, not an end user.

There is nothing wrong with sticking to the beaten path. Some people need to stick to the beaten path but some people can not. This is what makes us human. If everyone stuck to the beaten path then new discoveries with be few and far between. The path exists for those who want to follow it and it serves it's purpose as much as not following the path does.

Some people have to keep reminding themselves to "think out the box". Some have to remind themselves to stop "thinking out the box" so they can fit in. Some can not exist without the box. Then you get the few who understand that the box never existed in the fist place.

I do noticed .vip strategy is a lil different than others. Doing this, .vip does not have to work hard in their marketing. .vip gets its sell globally. $3million not a bad investment.
