So I don't know if this has ever happened to any of you but today I found a great domain, a real gem. It was a domain that was pending delete so usually what I do is start checking around 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM EST that is around the time that domains become available that are pending delete on that day. So like I said I had a domain that I really wanted and I was checking its availability and saw those amazing words in green from godaddy that the domain was available. I register it immediately, everything goes through I make the payment. I go back to look at my domain list and the domain is not in there. That's really weird, I then get impatient so I do a whois search to find that the domain is listed under another person? What the heck? I even checked my receipt and sure enough it says I purchased that same domain. At this point I am pissed so I am looking into how this could be possible. I then get an email from godaddy stating "we are sorry the domain purchase could not be made reason: domain already registered". So I don't know if this has happened to any of you but I am pretty pissed, and I find it funny that godaddy allows for these kind of mistakes.

If you were chasing a drop, it is not godaddy's fault, the drop could have been registered during your checkout process, that is the nature of the business, it comes down to seconds, many people are chasing the same names you are...

Yes that has happened to me several of times over the years.
After a while you just give up and realize there is nothing you can do.

In your case you both registered it at the same time except the person probably did it just a second before you.
They will refund you your money in a few days.
Even with that I still love Godaddy.

But it does happen. :(

Although this was the first time that this particular situation had happened to me I have noticed that domains I checked were available I come back minutes later to see they are gone. So I do understand picking up dropped domains can be quite competitive at times. I guess I can't put godaddy to blame though it could happen with any registrar. I just this to be a weird situation so I thought I would share it to see if anyone else had this happen to them.

Yes it's happened to me a few times. This is just one of those things that wouldn't happen in a perfect world but we all know that nothing is perfect :)

Few times dropped domains are in "auction" at godaddy for which they want few hundred $. In such case I register the same domain at moniker.

backorder the name next time, so this doesn't happen.

Godaddy is not realtime, it's likely that the domain was already snagged even though they said it was 'available'.
As said above a $60 backorder may have done the job.

Whenever I have regged a name with GoDaddy it seems to take longer before its actually regged and in my account vs regging names at DynaDot, its like instant there.

GoDaddy is cheaper but when it comes to grabbing names quickly when they drop forget about it, pay the couple bucks more and use a faster registrar.

Better luck next time.

Nothing wrong with godaddy. Don't mad at them. Mad at yourself because you didn't use a backorder service.

Yes, happened to me at another registrar in fact.

But there is another issue here beside catching drops: you need to be very careful where you check availability, since some places it seems all the checking is watched and the best names taken asap.

At Godaddy domain is registered after -/+60 seconds from the moment of order confirmation.

It has happened to me tons of times. The worst thing is I have missed out on domains and then later see them sell for like £x,xxx. Its all part of the business I'm afraid. Best thing to do is back order if you really want a domain. I have never blamed godaddy.
