First step: dont make any kind of hosting service from your home computer...why? Because you average 30% uptime.

What mbps is your connection anyway?

There's no such thing as unlimited. If your provider notices that you are using unusually large amounts of bandwidth, it's very likely that they will send you a notice and then suspend your service if do not stop using as much resources...

I wouldn't recommend hosting on your own home server either.

It's fine for your personal websites, but when it comes down to hosting other clients, reliability is a big issue.

Hosting need dedicated computers with 24x7 uptime. I dont think your personal home pc is good enough for this job.

Well on my IPS's website it crearly says no limit on bandwith so why would they suspend my account for using to much bandwith, I could sue them for that.

I'm almost certain that your provider has something in their terms of service to deal with users who want to set up their own personal hosting servers. I say this with out knowing who your ISP is for a reason.

You're going to run into problems if you try to host from your computer.

First of all, if you are running xp, don't even try it. You have to open the port on your firewall which makes it almost too simple for someone to attack your computer. If someone ddoses you, your computer may crash depending on your line or type of computer. As for your isp, if you go over datatransfer at one section they can suspend you, but as for bandwidth you can use as much as you want all day, but using XXX ammount at 1 section would be considered illegal to there tos, therefore they can suspend. My advice, get a cheap windows vps :)

Running a hosting service off of your home PC is a pretty bad idea... Chances are your home PC will make a horrible server, and as everyone else stated, there really is no such thing as unlimited. If you really want to start a hosting company, you should go with a dedicated server, they average about $100 per month.

Now a days Dedicated servers are more cheap. With $29.9/mo you can get a dedicated server with 40GB space & 100mbps connection. Just do upgrades after you exceed your space. But hosting clients in your own personal PC is not a good idea. At first when you'll try to setup, it will kill your head. Then one after another many bugs will come and you've to fix it regularly. If you pay to your ISP provider and take permission from them then you will be able to install if they allow. Usually ISP providers do not allow a home connection for a dedicated server. So better than take permission beofre doing any illigal stuffs.

YaSHaRz, I tried going down the route a few months ago. By 'try' I didn't actually attempt to do it, but I had considered it. It really is going to be hard in lots of ways. A lot of the previous members have stated a lot of them, and I cannot think of anymore, but would just like to re-iterrate what they have commented on.

It is possible for you to host clients on your home computer, but you would be risking a lot, and it is likely that you would probably mess up your system trying to configure it properly for your clients, if you were able to get any. Also, you will have trouble with payments and such I should imagine.

I am not telling you that you cannot go ahead with this plan, but a lot of people have thought about doing this themselves in the past.. It just doesn't happen. Your best bet is to start off with a small reseller plan, and 'learn the trade' for a few months, upgrading your plan if necessary. If you decide you want to jump a few steps, or you finally get to the stage where you can move onto a dedicated server, then this would be far better than hosting any clients on your home server.

If you are thinking of getting a reseller plan, then I would recommend Memset, Hostgator, 1TB.net and Streamline.net (Streamline is one I have recently found that is based in UK.. sounds pretty good.)

If you were to host from home..

You would need knowledge of linux to install and maintain a linux server,
as windows can be a pain when it comes to hosting, and linux is free.

You would have to look at how you are connected to the internet? if theres a power faliure will you still remain online? and will your server/pc/laptop remain online..

I wouldnt reccomend it unless you plan to host yourself and a few friends cheaply or do some free hosting from home.. but for a business your better off with a dedicated server.

Hosting from home is acceptable for smaller websites.
dslwebserver.com is a good resource for hosting a website from home.

Some ISPs do have bandwith limits. I know Comcast has one of 600 GB and Charter has a bandwith limit but I don't know what it is.

You must also make sure your ISP allows you to host websites on your connection. Otherwise you could get charged extra fees if they find out.
