Interesting, I suppose this is the end of pax Americana? Actually, I think it's a wise move and an important diplomatic step as the 'Net evolves.

I have heard rumours that the United Nations wants to control the net and eventually tax internet usage - not good :(

I'll comment later on this whole thread/idea, but wanted to answer texasgamer.

This was an idea of the US Congress awhile back (just a handful of congressmen, who soon realized this idea was almost unenforceable). They get taxes from it, via diffrent means, already. The United Nations, itself, does not have the right to tax anyone or any country. If they did, the US (and others) would not be so far behind in their due payments to the UN.

Don't think it's not out of the realm of possibility for the UN to tax internet usage because they don't do it now. I look for ICANN to come under control of the UN in the long run. I also look for such control to be just as ineffective as everything else over there. Hopefully, it stays out of UN control.

This is just some crap for the papers, nothing has changed... As long as they maintain control of the root files, they control the net, simple as that. Theres too much power in that for the US to ever relinquish completely, I bet my life on that. They may send out a few press releases that the mindless media will trump up and make it seem like the Internet is now independent, but it won't be. You can't be a hegemon if you willingly give up your powers...
