Most LLL.com domains (as with LLL.us and LLL.whatever) are being bought and sold by domain speculators. Some people argue that they are overhyped and overvalued because most of them may never find an end user commercial value. As has been proven time and time again, a company with truly deep pockets or a service people need / a unique idea can take any old reg fee pronouncable name and brand it (google, yahoo, youtube, digg, etc).
On the other side of the fence (and I tend to be more on this side personally), something does not have to have commercial value to have cash value. Even if these domains only end up being traded between collectors, they have value. They are rare, there are more people who would like to own an LLL.com than there are people selling them so the price is high. An old and famous painting has no practical commercial value, an old stamp has maybe 40c of commercial value if used to post a letter, a first edition book has no commercial value - but people want them because they are rare and we all know the kind of prices they fetch.
Bottom line, nobody knows where the prices on these domains will settle. It all comes down to simple supply and demand and the biggest risk to the value of 'rare' domains is an increase in supply side, which tends to come in the form of new TLDs. For example, fictional company Bob Smith & Co based in Europe, how much would they have considered paying for BSC.COM? How much would they now consider paying before they just decide to go with BSC.EU instead? Maybe their product is mobile phone related and they decide to buy neither of these names and just use their trademark to do a sunrise on BSC.MOBI.
Every time a company or popular service puts their primary site on a non .COM domain, it weakens the foothold of .COM a little. Their users get used to seeing other extensions, they start to try type-ins in other extensions, they may even consider registering one for their own site and the cycle continues.
Anyway, enough rambling for early Monday morning, agree with me or not it is something to think about and it sure is going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.
