Thoroughly confused

Im trying to get my personal site up and have tried a few free hosts, to no avail. I am pretty new to this but I am looking for a host, but by what ive seen im not sure what I need. I figured I should ask and get a few responses before I purchase a package <today> How much bandwidth do I need ? ect...ect... for a personal site. I was even thinking along the lines of having a pay by post forum, to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction before I get something I dont want ?

You can estimate the bandwidth you need by calculating the web space your web site needs and number of visitors you have ~ :]
