A great book is Nathaniel's Nutmeg, about the spice trade, especially nutmeg around the Indonesian island of Bando. After the Dutch and English fought a bloody war over it all, they came to peace terms. The English gave the captured Bando Island (the only source of nutmeg at the time) back to the Dutch. In return, the Dutch handed over New Amsterdam, a cold colony with no known wealth or resources, to the Brits.

Forgotten Bando Island is only visited by a handful of adventurous divers these days. Meanwhile, New Amsterdam has become the world's richest shithole.
