Hey everyone,

I've been keeping a close eye on the evolving TLD landscape, and one that's recently caught my attention – and I'm sure many of yours – is the new .AGI domain extension. With the rapid advancements in Artificial General Intelligence, this TLD seems incredibly timely and relevant.

For those who might not be fully up to speed, .AGI is positioned to be the go-to domain for anything related to AGI, AI research, development, applications, and the broader intelligence technology sector.

I'm really curious to hear the NamePros community's take on this.

Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) says AGI, or human-level AI, is ‘not a super useful term’:

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/11/sam-altman-says-agi-is-a-pointless-term-experts-agree.html

The problem with AGI, Altman said, is that there are multiple definitions being used by different companies and individuals. One definition is an AI that can do “a significant amount of the work in the world,” according to Altman — however, that has its issues because the nature of work is constantly changing.

“I think the point of all of this is it doesn’t really matter and it’s just this continuing exponential of model capability that we’ll rely on for more and more things,” Altman said.

Altman isn’t alone in raising skepticism about “AGI” and how people use the term.

Nick Patience, vice president and AI practice lead at The Futurum Group, told CNBC that though AGI is a “fantastic North Star for inspiration,” on the whole it’s not a helpful term.

“It drives funding and captures the public imagination, but its vague, sci-fi definition often creates a fog of hype that obscures the real, tangible progress we’re making in more specialised AI,” he said via email.

“There’s so much exciting real-world stuff happening, I feel AGI is a bit of a distraction, promoted by those that need to keep raising astonishing amounts of funding. It’s more useful to talk about specific capabilities than this nebulous concept of ‘general’ intelligence.”

I think if we're going to talk about a current handshake extension that is not yet backed by ICANN, it's important to provide full transparency so everyone reading understands what it is and what's happening with it.

With that said, let's expand on it a bit and dive into it head first...

What Is the .agi Domain Extension?

The .agi extension is not an ICANN-approved top-level domain (TLD). Instead, it exists within the Handshake ecosystem, a decentralized naming protocol built on blockchain technology.
  • .agi is likely intended to represent Artificial General Intelligence, a concept in AI that goes beyond narrow task-based intelligence.
  • It is not part of the traditional DNS root zone managed by ICANN, meaning it won’t resolve in standard browsers without plugins or custom DNS configurations.
  • Handshake domains like .agi are minted and traded on blockchain platforms, often via auctions, and are stored in crypto wallets.

Why Handshake Domains Like .agi Are Not as Trusted as ICANN backed Domains

Despite their innovation, Handshake domains face several trust and adoption barriers:

Lack of Universal Resolution
  • They don’t resolve natively in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox without extensions or DNS overrides.
  • This limits mainstream usability and SEO visibility.
Security & Authentication Concerns
  • No centralized certificate authority (CA) integration for SSL/TLS.
  • Users can’t easily verify domain ownership or trust HTTPS connections.
Fragmentation Risk
  • Handshake operates outside the ICANN root zone, creating potential namespace collisions if ICANN later approves a .agi TLD.
  • This undermines long-term brand stability and legal defensibility.
Low Institutional Adoption
  • Major registrars, hosting providers, and enterprise IT systems don’t support Handshake domains.
  • That makes them risky for serious commercial use or brand-building.
Legal Ambiguity
  • No formal dispute resolution mechanisms like UDRP.
  • Trademark holders have limited recourse if their brand is squatted on a Handshake domain.

Why the .agi Extension May Not Be Approved by ICANN in 2026

While Unstoppable Domains and the 0G Foundation have announced plans to apply for .agi in ICANN’s 2026 gTLD round, there are several strategic and regulatory hurdles that could prevent its approval.

Namespace Collision Risk
  • .agi already exists in decentralized ecosystems like Handshake and now 0G, which creates potential conflicts with ICANN’s root zone.
  • ICANN may reject strings that duplicate or closely resemble existing alt-root TLDs, especially if they pose user confusion or technical instability.
Semantic Sensitivity
  • “AGI” stands for Artificial General Intelligence, a term with growing public and regulatory scrutiny.
  • ICANN may apply public interest tests to ensure the string isn’t misleading, overly generic, or prone to misuse, especially in sectors like healthcare, finance, or AI governance.
Regulatory and Ethical Oversight
  • The rise of autonomous agents and AI-native platforms raises ethical and legal concerns around identity, data sovereignty, and misinformation.
  • ICANN could delay or reject .agi if it lacks a robust governance framework for AI-related content and identity services.
Speculative Intent and Utility Proof
  • ICANN is tightening its stance against speculative gTLD applications. If .agi is perceived as a crypto-native asset grab rather than a public utility, it may be flagged.
  • The application must demonstrate clear DNS integration, not just blockchain-native use cases like Brave browser resolution or crypto payments.
Applicant Guidebook Constraints
  • The updated Applicant Guidebook (AGB), rolled out in May 2025, includes stricter evaluation criteria for new strings.
  • If .agi fails to meet new standards for technical stability, rights protection, and public benefit, it may not pass Initial Evaluation.
Trademark and Rights Objections
  • “AGI” is used by multiple companies and research labs globally. This opens the door to Legal Rights Objections (LRO) or String Similarity Objections during the ICANN process.
  • Without a strong rights protection mechanism, the application could be legally challenged.

Note: I suppose the question remains as to whether or not (after soaking in all the above) .agi is in a good enough position to pass all the scrutiny ICANN will have for it.

How many similar acronym Trademarks do you think might contest or object to it?

Here’s a list of just a few notable companies and organizations that use the acronym AGI, either as part of their name or branding. These span across artificial intelligence, finance, software, and industrial sectors (All of which, might contest or object to the AGI ICANN Application.
