The story was dugg, so I'm sure a lot of those are fake bids now.

Hrm, yea good point. It's now reached $100K! I doubt someone would pay that much...

I will bid for it in an instant if I've got the money. But I always thought it was suspended by the Christmas Island Internet Administration. Hmm.

"As of April 22, the bidding rose to over a trillion dollars, causing the software used by the auction site to malfunction[1]. This bid as well as several others over a billion are likely fakes. Other bids include $30 million and $150000"

I love the bit about the offers over a billion likely being fake.. Like they honestly believed that a bid of several hundred million would be legit? :)

This thread is a joke and it shouldn't belong to the Industry News section, where us domainers actually expect serious news.

Wikipedia article about Goatse

Don't go to the Internet Archive link unless you want to be disgusted to the point of tossing your cookies. BTW, I think the traffic from the domain is probably worth $150,000 or more to the right people. This is (was?) one of the most infamous sites on the net!

How "famous" was this domain? Did it receive hundreds of thousands of visitors every month to justify the current "bid" of 1 million?

Alexa is extremely low and a link popularity check reveals no incoming links in Google, only in Yahoo - and that number is not high either.

The way I see it, a gross site died 3 years ago, the domain expired sometime after, someone picked it up recently and is trying to profit and the whole wikipedia article thing with statements such as "It's expected to reach a final bid of $5,000,000" seems nothing more than a joke.

Actually, it did receive hundreds of thousands of visitors every month. It was banned from google and yahoo, though.

as with many other things which are not worth the attention. this is a prime example.

Obviously it's not going to sell for anywhere near what has been bid, but it's like any other vanity domain that people spend thousands of dollars for. It's sort of like owning a piece of Internet history. Sure it may not seem to have much value on the surface, but I guarantee someone would probably spend a nice chunk of money to acquire it.
