Now the dust has settled on the GoDaddy acquisition of Dan, some might be wondering who is the next possible contender to disrupt the industry. What what it's worth, I believe the likely competitor will come from either Namecheap or Dynadot (the latter since their UI/UX is similarly friendly like Dan's).

If you think either company has a chance, what would it take (e.g. in terms of finances and vision/strategic direction) for either to seriously rival GoDaddy?

Secondly, do you think the competitor will be a total newcomer?

We truly wish DAN + Godaddy a great success story... We also wish DAN 3.0 going to be bigger than DAN 2.0 .

More marketplaces lead to more competition , in turn offering better services to sellers and buyers.

We have started our idea about building DaaZ in 2017, throughout the last 5 years we have been building the DaaZ platform. DaaZ is a 4 year old company and circa a 3 year old domain marketplace.

Just to keep it simple, we are not competing with any one, but we want to make you aware of our presence. We are a pure domain marketplace and we charge just 5% for "Buy It Now" (BIN), 7% for "auctions" and "make an offer" sales.

Kindly note, we do not ask the buyer to pay 2% to 3% card fees required by other marketplaces.

So far 99% of our payouts are processed with in 48 hours.

We want to remain a pure marketplace for years to come. In Summary, we are just one more option for the domainers.

Why is no one mentioning Sav? Far ahead of Dynadot and Namecheap

Because they're shady. Not transparent about ownership, backing and their backend had countless of bugs.

Also, keep in mind... Domaining is just a niche in the registrar business. I don't think namecheap or DD will step up and try to claim the void that will be left wide open.

The only registrar who is in touch with domainers and has the tech ready to be put to use is Epik.

Well, we're accelerating not slowing down so maybe Dan 3.0 takes over Dan 2.0 :)

There won't be any "next Dan" anytime soon, unfortunately. This current Dan had the luck to secure an early investment as a dutch startup and this allowed them to build the marketplace fast and nicely. Any newcomer has to bring lots of money to the table if they want to follow in Dan's footsteps plus a whole new set of innovation and new ideas. That's where Dan disrupted the industry, fast payments, fast customer service, beautiful (converting) landing pages, they filled a gap and they've been in the right place at the right time. I think only one of the current registrars, popular with domainers, such as Dynadot, Namecheap, Namesilo, might be able to do this, but they already have their own crappy internal marketplaces so...

So let me recapitulate:

Godaddy + afternic + DAN.

are you kidding me?

That's some sort of monopol.

I just hope that if there is a competitor, they offer a far better search criteria, similar to expireddomains . net. I end up looking on there first, because I find that the individual market places just dont have very good filter criteria.

Just enjoy the happiness for the time being.
We can make a decision when something come up bad.
It's only a change of the DNS - No big deal.
Exactly. Not really a "change of the DNS", but I get your point.

I can't see anyone replacing Dan anytime soon. Way easier said than done. And they won't be another, or next, Dan, they will be whatever they make themselves to be.

Getting to where Undeveloped-->Dan got to, certainly didn't happen overnight and absolutely can't.

Looking at Sedo, over 10 years on Dan in the industry, and they still need to constantly work and improve their services to satisfy new trends and demand, while maintaining trust. This stuff takes perseverance, risk and patience, not the qualities we always see in new startups.

Maybe Afterdan once they'll bring over all Afternic brokers to close your deals :)

The main things that was missing from Dan was a phone number, end user recognition and to make matters worse they keep that link on top of pages showing a 4.7 rating.

With the GoDaddy buy they will have a name end users recognize, they will have a phone number (I assume, like afternic pages) and with the GoDaddy name, the rating will matter less but I hope it is removed.

I think a good feature is one that forces the user to confirm on email to see the price. Domainers can have big lists after a few years and try to give discounts and close sales. I sold names by lowering prices to people that showed interest in the past but I only was able to contact them because they made an offer.

This industry is also missing a hard sales pitch page. Sales could increase 50% with a good pitch page.

I'm rooting for Dynadot.

Love afternic as an aftermarket, Godaddy as a registrar not so much.

Dan was the best, hopefully the merger will prove to be beneficial to domainers, but only time will tell.

One only needs to look at what happened to Uniregistry after that acquisition. GD hasn't maintained the app well, Customer Support is slow to respond and uninformed about the app when they do. Also, GD didn't make a smooth glide path for transferring Uniregistry Ds to GoDaddy. There's market uncertainty around domains left at Uniregistry.

I'm not aware of any gestures made to the domaining community, to show that GD will still care about domainers. Due to this acquisition, a lot of time and money was lost by domainers, IMO. Personally, I think they acquired Uni to raid the members and products, then to kill it. Anyone else see it this way?

Why should we expect anything different from the Dan acquisition? Dan could innovate in ways that GD is not likely to emulate, e.g., their lease-purchase option. They may keep some Dan features, but I see this as another raid.

Dan never had any traffic. I don't know if they ever made any sales. We had good DNs listed wth them for years wth no views. They are lucky to be taken over.l

Someone paid them over $70M. How would that work if they don't get traffic or generate sales?

Anecdotal evidence ≠ reality.

What's your examples of "good DN"? Traffic and sales are part of that.

Everything is relative. Dan has a successful business model, both for buyers and sellers that not many can replicate in terms of speed and safety. They take the brunt of the hardship involved in domain exchanges not to mention at a minimal cost. This takes time to establish a profit and they weren't afraid to do so.

Now that they are established, sheesh they were established when they were Undeveloped, probably the smartest purchase in the DN industry, ever.

We have to stop looking at the "next Dan" and focus on the Dan that is because most companies aren't going to take the risk that Dan took on truly being an investors + buyer's platform where everyone is happy.

Why would GD screw this up? They have a perfectly working 3rd party marketplace where they can integrate millions of domains from their old, much to be desired UI and transfers and (non-existent) escrows methods while keeping costs low because of their already massive inventory.

Their UI doesn't even allow for partial and automatic search of names unlike Dynadot/Dan/Namecheap. That's something they'd need to fix soon before any aspirations of becoming a competitive force.

@DaaZ

You urgently need a neat logo and hiring a UI/UX expert.

That website looks like it was built in Frontpage.
Many thanks for your feedback. We will release DaaZ 's next version with a better UI.. We will share the further details in the right time..

I've enjoyed your service so far, but have been wondering if there any plans to incorporate domain lease/rental or installment payments at DaaZ, like what's offered via DAN and Epik?

Thanks in advance!

DaaZ already supports lease to own feature (installments feature - maximum number of installments we are supporting at moment is 36 months) , rental feature is something not supported by DaaZ at moment. We may bring in if we notice the demand for it. our observation is , renting domain name is not a popular one at moment atleast the buyers survery we did 99% are not in favour of using a rented domain name.

DAN was after the money....

+ a little bit more possibilites, that's true, but actually everyone there hopes something from it
(imagine your stock-share you have in your company to grow x5 or more).

So, that's quite the opposite of what is happening here.

I must truly say, I cannot see that 'A godaddy brand' next to the DAN logo.

it is sickening!

very disappointed.

Well the GD branding (i.e. 'a GoDaddy brand') is already up on the landing pages. Let's see if sales improve for some...
They need to remove the Trust Pilot crap and replace it with the Afternic / GoDaddy phone numbers, if they don't they will not see too much of an increase.
