It seems after the false dawn of Aftermarket, Spaceship have stepped up and are ready to pick up where Dan left off, with domain landers and a planned marketplace.

Spaceship has the potential to surpass Dan.com.

Dan.com was on the verge of creating a registrar. The registrar element was the missing piece to their formula. GoDaddy decision makers were aware that Dan.com could disrupt Afternic. Many domain investors use Afternic because it is affiliated with GoDaddy. So GD purchased Dan and their expertise - smart move.

Spaceship is one of the fastest growing registrars of the last two years, if not the fastest growing. Adding customizable sales landers will see them competing head-to-head with Afternic and Sedo. This was the first year I have more domains registered with Namecheap and Spaceship than GoDaddy.

Possible I might not have any domains at GoDaddy 2-3 years from now.

As long as Spaceship keeps their aftermarket commission fee in the single digits, they have a good chance of surpassing Dan.com.

Dan existed in a time when there was no Afternic penalty for listing your domains at other places. Therefore, people would point their names to Dan and list on Afternic and get the best of both worlds.

Since the acquisition of Dan by Afternic, the option to point your domains to other services comes with a cost. If you do use non-Afternic nameservers, you pay an additional 10% commission fee to Afternic, or choose to not list with them and lose out on their partner network which has more eyeballs than any other service available.

Spaceship/Namecheap has their own partner network, but it's nowhere near the size of GoDaddy's. So, if you do use their landers, you're going to be penalized somehow. We can only hope in the future that their partner network grows to make it comparable to GoDaddy/Afternic.

What should happen is that they create a dedicated/official thread on here and all the suggestions currently being made to Godaddy are instead directed to the Spaceship rep here.

for 99percent people prices count for most.

Hard to beat GoDaddy's partnership network at this point. But if any registrar can do it asap, it'd be NameCheap/Spaceship. Hopefully they don't charge too much commissions for their landers. Afternic has outrageous commission rates.

If Sedo were also a registrar they would be GD's biggest direct competitor.
As it stands, Namecheap (v Godaddy) + Spaceship (vs Afternic) are the closest thing to this.
