20 years of domain registrations would cost $140.

10 years ago, if you monitored future technologies, you might have been been able to hand register the following domains.

mp3s.com
hdtv.com
homenetworks.com
homewifi.com

etc....

I'd gladly pay $140 for any one of those.

Same here.

I think "next big thing" domains are a smart investment if you've researched the topic to death and feel pretty confident that it will "hit" somewhere down the road.

A common misconception among new domainers is that you can jump into this business and buy a few domains and sell them a few months later for loads of money.

While it does happen every once in a while, it's not the norm. Most of the time, you end up holding good domains for a year or more at least.

If you're looking for good expired domains, there is a forum on the NamePros forums which allows users to post topics full of domains which people may be interested in buying - It's good to keep an eye out once in a while :)

Just know that you've come to the right place. There are thousands of archived threads that are full of valuable information.

Here is my tip.

Don't spend a single dollar on domains until you've learned a bit and have reached a comfort level. Many of us, due to newbie excitement, went out and wasted hundreds of dollars when we started. If you avoid that common mistake, you're already ahead of the game.

Harness that excitement and focus on reading and learning. Don't believe the hype. There is work involved.

DnJournal.com is also a great resource.

Last time Grrrila posted one of his longish awe inspiring posts, I regged half a dozen domains that might, sometime down the road, pay off. His previous posts are a goldmine of ideas, I'm telling ya.....

This "future" stuff is not future at all. It's happening now. You need to read science journals more. I actually invest in plenty of companies in these fields.

I recommend you read Ray Kurzweil's book, "The Singularity is Near." It's all about the exponential acceleration of scientific advancement. The more we know and invent, the faster we build upon it. In the next 100 years, we will experience something like 20,000 years of of innovation (in today rate of innovation). It is not linear.

This thread inspired me to register MeatGrowing.com and GrowingMeat.com. There are many scientists who believe that the future of the meat industry may involve growing meat in laboratories rather than keeping animals.

The theoretical benefits of this include:
- Not putting animals through suffering.
- Possibly a lot healthier because you can control factors in a lab that you can't with animals.
- Possibly cheaper and more practical to grow in the long run. You could do this at the top of a 20 storey building.
- Possible to invent new meats that don't exist today. e.g. a steak made of frog meat that is bigger than a frog.
