Hi everyone! The 3D market appears to be exploding! Record takes at the box office by movies such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland and the announcement this week of the new 3D TV which is set to hit markets shortly have helped buoy interest in 3D multimedia platforms. Even the major American television network NBC has jumped in and will be broadcasting the NCAA Final Four basketball games in 3D!

A direct beneficiary from this renewed interest and greatly improved 3D technology is the domain business. Some of you had foresight many years ago and reg'd great names early on. Others (myself included) have only become aquainted with 3D domaining more recently, but see the huge potential this market has opened up for domainers.

Let this be the place for you to show off your 3D domain names. Ask for opinions, marketing strategies or even an appraisal or guesstimation of value. Also, feel free to post any relevant news releases/articles related to the 3D industry.

I will start the thread off with a few of my own reg's..

I am not suprised with 3ddating, online dating is huge niche, with tons of affiliate/cpc programs.

But 3dblog looks like a very good buy, almost a steal.

June 23, 2010 -- 3D TV and 3D Blu-ray standalone player revenue in the U.S. has exceeded $55 million in the first three months since the launch of these products in February, according to leading market research company The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service.

“3D TV and Blu-ray players are seeing steady growth even as major product line launches are slated for the coming months,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD. As more consumers adopt 3D, the industry can help foster a 3D ecosystem similar to that of HD.”

One inhibitor to adoption of 3D TV at home is the need to wear special glasses when watching 3D TV. These glasses can add significant cost and work only with their brand of television. Only 10 percent of consumers surveyed in The NPD Group’s Analyst Poll of NPD Panelists cited “looking silly” as a main concern of the glasses, whereas 41 percent cited not having enough glasses on hand for everyone watching the set.

“3D TV will be a premium home entertainment experience in 2010,” said Rubin. “Many consumers have already shown that they are willing to use special glasses to obtain the effects, but want to preserve the social aspect of the group television viewing.”

“Don’t F*cking Tell Me What to Do”

While content hunting for my 3DMusicTV & 3DMuzic sites I came across a song title that could be the theme song for this thread. Its also an interesting story about another 3D first.

"Robyn has premiered the new web video for “Don’t F*cking Tell Me What to Do” on her website, Robyn.com. The video is the first of its kind, a 3D video using no cameras, written entirely in code, with much of the content fed by fans via a Twitter feed. The video is a unique experience with every view as it regenerates with each loading of the URL. The first portion of the video features visualization of Robyn’s lyrics in 3D. The remainder of the video is created by users themselves who tweet in what is killing them using the Twitter hash tag, #killingme."

Read more: "Robyn and Twitter launch interactive, 3D video." ~ Zoiks! Online - An entertainingly humorous magazine.

Just wanted to say that ROI is different for different people.

Making $$$ a month profit for FT work is not enough ROI to live on in the developed world.

Making $$$ a month profit off a hobby while learning sales/marketing, analytical techniques is a HUGE BUZZ for some.

Making $0 off a hobby while creating a neat website using some cool tools and being creative. Good enough for me most of the time.

Some people take LSD. Some people drink Alcohol. Some people trade domains. Some people drive an R32.

--Do viewers look at a TV screen and ask 'where are the pages'?
I know what you are trying to say here in regards to the website experience potentially being the same on a one page site versus a 150 page site.

What you aren't taking into consideration is that the makers of 1, 2, 3 page minisites generally don't purchase traffic. So you have to rely on the SEs, which is difficult with so little content.

So you may very well have a nice little video player, but without significant text content you are obviously limiting your traffic.

Apparently, you see domains as places for print format pages and webmasters as one-off hand-crank printers.
Here in 2010, pretty much. If you venture away from that model at this level, you had better be willing to spend ad money or do serious spamming.

I see domains names as Station 'call letters' and the web as a global tv broadcast network.
I won't necessarily argue this, but you, I nor pretty much everyone reading this has the money to make an online TV station work. Obviously your ideals are rooted in scaling down what the really big fish can do.

Both webs co-exist. The first generation belonged to print formats. The following generations belong to TV.
Then we might as well all just close up shop now if this is true (it isn't).

(BTW, I checked out dubdubdub.com - now THAT's a mini-site!)
Actually that is a business card site. A decent minisite is something like Mold.us. A really good minisite is HappyMeal.com.

Retailers are currently selling about 70,000 3D TVs every month, and could sell up to 3 million of the devices by year's end, according to the Consumer Electronics Association.

"That's a pretty solid number for a new technology," Shawn DuBravac, CEA's chief economist said at the organization's annual Line Show in Manhattan.

Based on current numbers, consumers could buy between 1.5 million and 3 million 3D sets in 2010, though DuBravac said it is probably closer to 2 million or 2.5 million devices.

What you aren't taking into consideration is that the makers of 1, 2, 3 page minisites generally don't purchase traffic. So you have to rely on the SEs, which is difficult with so little content.

So you may very well have a nice little video player, but without significant text content you are obviously limiting your traffic.

A storefront can 'purchase traffic' by setting up shop, with an attractive window display, on a block that gets a lot of traffic. Unfortunately, drive-by traffic does not pay the bills. Sales do. And if your targeting a niche market -high traffic 'set-ups' often cost more than they are worth.

Several of my "1, 2, 3 page minisites" rank high and make sales on their own. But what you don't seem to get, or 'take into consideration', is that, together, those little video players can also function as a TV SITE NETWORK.

So instead of looking at it as individual low traffic minisites. Think of them as 20 sites -with say a min. of 1,000 uniques a month each (though I have several sites that generate numbers well above 1k/mth) Now look at the aggregate traffic as one number you can deliver to a 'message'. Also, with TV sites 'Time-on-Site' is a better metric to discuss.

Like a TV network I can run ads on one station, a group of stations or all of them at the same time; All within that little video player screen.

Here in 2010, pretty much. If you venture away from that [print] model at this level, you had better be willing to spend ad money or do serious spamming.... I nor pretty much everyone reading this has the money to make an online TV station work. Obviously your ideals are rooted in scaling down what the really big fish can do.

First off, YouTube does all right without text pages. And it is the second most used search engine Now!

And yes, digital media tools have scaled down the media playing field, first for 'print media' tools and now for 'rich media' tools. This "New Media" web allows everyone to be a publisher, but equally as important... it allows everyone to be a media advertiser.

And, funny you should mention Business Cards, because they are at the core of a just launched (everyone can be a publisher & advertiser) online TV station model that I'm betting will work".

I call it the Business Card TV Station!

In short, I offer Free Video Business Cards... that can be used on their own, run as ads across my TV site network (where I'm betting the 3D stations will be a popular draw), or you can use your card as the foundation for your own Business Card TV Station... where you can then generate income by running other video business card on your station.

This model works, as I already have a few good clients, but who knows if it will become a media "big fish". What I do know is I rather use the 'Big Net' approach to 'fishing' and I would appreciate it if folks who use rods not beat me with them trying to convince me their method is the best and/or the only way to go.

Certainly, if you, and others, have an open mind, you can see that 3D names have a place in a new media domaining ecosystem.

Hey Lexis... thanks for the post...
.. my first 'hope' is that i am able to gain all my money back when all is said and done
... the second hope is that i start to actually make money in the second year
..... my third hope?... well, i start thinking of my third hope and make myself STOP because i'd be getting way too far ahead of myself, but that third hope is a pretty cool place to be (haha)

my end-user search will begin, most likely august/september/october... i have a bunch of things i need to tie up first, but i am excited about the hunting.

Would love to hear the numbers on 3d PC's... as these are starting to creep past the TV's as far as demand.

I have "THE3DPC.com"
... obviously, i missed the boat on the real deal, but how is this one?.. lots of different views on adding the word 'the' but i'm still so unsure about it... i like it though.

My Rankings, My Hits, My Visitors - June 2010

I hope you all can appreciate this part... lot of interesting things to take from it.
Here are my stats and findings for the month.

These would be my Top Performers for the month of June thus far just for the names sitting at PARKED:

• 3d(s-e-x)games.net - 37 (no dashes)
• 3dgame.co.uk - 33
• 3dhentaimovie.com - 32
• 3dto.com - 30
• 3dmovis.com - 23
• 3daikido - 17

** NOTES -
I have about 46 other 3d domain names with at least 10 uniques

- - - - - - - - - - -

and more amazingly...
... (check this out)...

out of all my names .. (lot of names - 700) ...

....... ONLY NINE (yes, NINE!) of them did NOT have at least one unique visitor for the month of June
How's That?!!
:)

and i mean, not just the obvious dot-coms and dot net's..
... i mean you're talking about 350 dot-info's - ALL but ONE were hit (Glasses-Free.info)
..... 80 .us's... (eight of the nine were dot us)
...... 60 .co.uk's
....... about 10 .ES names

That's a lot of 3d searching boy

- - - - - - - - - - -

Here were the big Losers for June - NINE GOOSE EGGS!

• 3dNewYork.us
• DVD3d.us
• 3dVegas.us
• 3dNYC.us
• 3dNotebook.us
• 3dMobilePhones.us
• 3d-Sports.us
• 3dNY.us
• Glasses-Free.info

- - - - - - -

A few stats from some of the 'mini sites'
(I am ONLY counting Unique, First Time Visits - Any additional page loads are not reflected)

• 3dDvDRentals.com - 149
• 3dBuildingProjection.com - 76 (Went Live June 10th)
• 3dMotionControllers.com - 37
• 3dNewsForum.com - 73
• 3dTVPlay.com - 131
• Online3d.net - 38
• RGBYTV.com - 283
• Hentay3d.com - 127
• FullHD3dLCD.com - 39

Google seems to be penalizing me for affiliate marekting on a lot of these (? - i'm pretty sure !) - i've been coming in and out of page one/two for about 3 months on 3d motion controllers, 3d Dvd Rentals and full hd 3d lcd.

... NOW...

3d dvd rentals only (ONLY) ranks for the name itself (3d dvd rentals) but for none of the others that were ranking as high as page 1 ('3d movies on dvd'... etc).. SMACKED!
... all my traffic for 3d dvd rentals comes form yahoo and bing ... check '3d dvd' on yahoo and find me number 3 (38 on Bing)... same for '3d dvd movies' (49 on Bing)

I have since begun minimizing the use of affiliates now in other sites and am thinking just selling the placement along with the domain name would fetch me more in the long run... i will continue the same model with 3d dvd rentals simply because yahoo and bing still combine for about 20% - 25% of all search.... i also need netflix to incorporate some 3d content into their catalog.

Anyway .. would love to hear what kind of numbers you all have... i would love to be able to have a comparison of some kind... feel like sharing? :)

Hope you all got something out of this.

Hey 3dDomainNames:

Thanks for an interesting and informative post. One of the best of the thread in my opinion. While I am not comfortable in publishing numbers here, I can lend some information. My small (16 domain) 3D portfolio is all sitting at PARKED for now. On a YTD Basis, my 5 highest visited sites (in order of traffic) are:

3dOnlineVideoGames.com
3dLaptopComputers.com
3dLcdProjector.com
3dLaptopComputer.com
3dVideoGameConsoles.com

On a parking earnings basis, 3dLcdProjector.com is blowing all the others away, however it is by no means a BIG earner.

The most interesting information I have gleened from my PARKED stats is that my visitor/serach ratio, which is at 21% YTD, is growing each month. This alone confirms that more and more consumers are actually searching for 3d products. So much so that they are actually willing to click on a keyword on the parked site to further their search. This typically isn't the case with the "just curious" surfer. I believe that as more and more 3D paid ads are available for the parked domains, the click earnings will increase significantly.

Just my $0.02

Alan

Sorry Wendy, I thought that given the fact that the parking stats had to do with 3D domains and the increasing popularity of same, that it was on topic. I thought this was a 3d discussion thread. My bad.

yeah ... NO BAD AWRosey... you were on topic and that topic DOES pertain to this discussion....

... but if we're not arguing, the "powers" that be won't allow an ACTUAL discussion to take place.

... not allowed to talk about renewals, not allowed to talk about unique hits... not allowed discuss or offer advertising... not allowed to use the word 'sex'... not allowed to defend yourself....

.... but if i wanted to come in here and call you all idiots, i'm all good.

whatever

this is becoming just ridiculous now...

haha.. i really need to stay away from this place for a while.
