From here on out...resellers in general will stay away from all but the most premium of names...most of which are owned by mTLD still. Only 2 out of 11 names sold. And both of those seemed to have a low reserve. $25k for mortgages...hmm...I would think mortgages to be a MUCH higher paying keyword than Flowers.

I was also glad to see .net as a strong second place finisher selling over half it's domains listed and raking up $433k in sales. The dotnet is still a strong player as I have come to realize this year and it's good see heavy players agree with me.

So....while dotcom raked in the most bucks...dotnet had a strong sales record and dotmobi bombed. It's over for the hype of the extension. It began with traffic and the $200k flowers sale...and it ends at traffic today.

Strong keyword in a nice $xx,xxx range and sold for nearly 10 times what the similar laptops.mobi sold for. That's as similar for comparison as you can get and makes it clear that dotmobi doesn't even come close to dotnet in value.


Interesting to note that at the traffic sale when flowers.mobi sold for $200k..mortgages.net sold for $149k that same day. Today mortgages dotmbi sold for $25k...not petty change but obviously the dotnet sold for 6 times that amount. I believe in all honest that if mortgages.net was sold today...it would have gotten a higher price and the buyer of mortgages.net got a good deal.

The .net deals out there are fantastic. I don't even own percentage wise that many...however..it's time for me to start hitting the whois and finding me some gems. It's on like Donkey Kong..dotnet here I come.

Can't say I am .mobi fan in particular but it ain't over , yes , I also kept some blook names!

Better returns at this auction, maybe the silent auction will even turn up some surprises, didn't see any IDN's anywhere but then the organisers probably don't know what they are!

I think the auctioneer could have done a better job. He wanted to get through them all so fast, which I guess he had to .. but he needs a little patter about the domain name - even if people already have their mind made up when they get there - they need some encouragement or some affirmation that they're making a great decision. That sort of thing was very few and very far between.
I think the moniker crew needs to give him a cheat sheet or something with some things to say about the domain name. Just my 2 cents.

Your guess is as good as mine. I think the reserve prices were set too high for any decent .mobi sales and I said before the auction that no .mobi names would sell over 100K, not that I don't think .mobi has it's place but it is all speculation at this point.

With the recent launch of the Iphone ads I feel there is a "shake up" or at least a "wake up" for the mobile web.

The users will decide if they like surfing fullblown .com sites or if they prefer sites that are tailored to their screen.

I think if the price to browse the web via your phone was not as high as it is currently the Iphone MIGHT have a chance, but given the bandwidth costs in the US I don't know anyone willing to shell out that kind of cash to surf the web with the Iphone.

Time and user experiences will tell.

since beginning of .mobi story, i knew it wouldn't be a huge EXT, but about flowers.mobi and mortgages i think that there will be some people ordering flowers from a mobile while none a mortgage, i think its adapted to this EXT (still 200k is a lot for that EXT, but Rick S. hasn't been wrong about his other domaining ideas...)

It doesn't sound like you have an agenda or anything :hehe: Mobi won't do much until regular people start using it. It will either be a powerful force in the future or worth nothing at all. I'm betting on the first one myself but time will tell. To think that the fate of an extention relies on auctions populated by 99% domainers is silly.

There is a big difference between .mobi and net,org,info,biz,ect. Content restrictions. There is no specific use for any other extention. Anyone can have any kind of site designed any kind of way but mobi is just for mobile phones. Its completely different and the only reason it stands a chance in a market with many useless tlds.

Strong keyword in a nice $xx,xxx range and sold for nearly 10 times what the similar laptops.mobi sold for. That's as similar for comparison as you can get and makes it clear that dotmobi doesn't even come close to dotnet in value.


Interesting to note that at the traffic sale when flowers.mobi sold for $200k..mortgages.net sold for $149k that same day. Today mortgages dotmbi sold for $25k...not petty change but obviously the dotnet sold for 6 times that amount. I believe in all honest that if mortgages.net was sold today...it would have gotten a higher price and the buyer of mortgages.net got a good deal.

The .net deals out there are fantastic. I don't even own percentage wise that many...however..it's time for me to start hitting the whois and finding me some gems. It's on like Donkey Kong..dotnet here I come.

No my guess is better because it's not a GUESS...it's an analyzation based on experience and so far..I have called it correctly MANY times. I called the last TRAFFIC for mobi too. If you want to say it's guessing that's fine but be aware I keep guessing it right.

My guess is that now mobi will tank for sales at places like Sedo and Afternic. The forums here will have a harder and harder time selling mobi's in the marketplace and eventually...Namepros will move the mobi marketplace into the regular marketplace area (within one year would be my guess). In 18-24 months mobi domains will be dropped like flies and only strong solid SENSIBLE keywords will hold value. All those 2 worders and brandables will be worthless.

Go .net....it continues to impress me as a solid PROVEN long term investment. Why buy a mobi in aftermarket when the certainty of success isn't there? Yes everyone likes to speculate but it's sensible to do it at Reg Fee now for reseller prices. Why pay $xxxx for a mobi now? I bet the 2 mobis that did sell...get developed. Which is generally good but resellers thrive on selling to resellers. If you compare the amount of end-user sales that happen daily compared to reseller, domainer, and speculator sales you will see that end-user sales are few. Granted they are normally for good money but many domainers have bills to pay.

Who has the stomach here to renew 200 mobi domains in the next 18 months? How about 36 months? Those fees will continue to add up. Eating away at profits. If you hit year 3 of reg fees...and you have 200 domains..that's about $6k-$10k you are spending...just for 200 domains which most likely only 5 are good and you will be lucky to sell 2...will those 2 you sell make you $6k? Doubtful. Mobi domainers need to wake up and hedge their bets into other extensions. They have exposed themselves to a high risk by having large mobi percentages in their portfolio.

It's not working out for mobineers and that's getting more and more obvious everyday.

Want? I don't have a want where mobi is concerned. I am discussing and expressing my views. The internet is HUGE...especially for .net. I work in small niches (forums and gaming mostly) ...competition for purchasing doesn't worry or bother me. It only helps to raise value of existing domains I may have in the genre...like religionforum.net.

If you have your own opinion and ideas outside of myself please express them. Maybe you can bring to the table your take on the traffic sales and how it effects mobi.

I totally agree..I am a developer first and foremost and it's disgusting to see domains get into the hands of people that sit on them with NO INTENTION of development. As of yet I have not developed any of my mobi names but that's partially because I have better more fruitful ideas to work on and I am also unsure if in a year mTLD will relax their restrictions once iphone and other good mobile devices are released. Wouldn't it suck to create this great trimmed down site and in 18 months you have to expand it because mobile is no longer restricted to small text displaying. So until I feel I have a killer idea, the time to develop, and a sure way to make income...my mobis sit but I certainly have intentions to develop..especially my dxd.mobi.

I know it isn't the topic of the thread but the .mobi coding requirements are not as onerous as many think. There are 3 basic requirements for the default site presentation. After that you can do what you want. You may not get a 5/5 ready score but if it fits your business model then go for it. People often confuse the requirements with the recommendations...2 completely different things.
Fail the requirements and your site may be shut off if/when they enforce compliance. Fail the recommendations and you get a low ready.mobi score. Unless the mtld showcase is important to you then who cares?

I meant you seem to want to promote the idea that mobi is dead/dying already. I expressed my view in post #237. Yeah, .net is second in line to .com but .nets value is still roughly 1/10th of a .com.

I agree that the traffic auction will hurt mobi sales for sure but the ulimtate fate of mobi lies in the hands of those who surf the net on phones. If they never use mobi, its worthless. If they do, it could be gold. Until then its all speculation.

That's my point...not that mobi is dead..it's that it is LOSING VALUE in comparison to other extensions which are on the rise. I would even argue .tv is doing well with gains. I would much rather have slow steady growth for 10 years than 1 year of overhyped sales and then a drastic drop. dotnet is NOT speculation...it's a proven extension and yes..maybe 10% the value of dotcom but guess what...I can find you threads from sometime last year where most agreed .net was 5% of dotcom...so in essence it's DOUBLED in the views of many domainers including me. Due to the high cost of dotcom dotnet is becoming increasingly more attractive. dotnet is distinguishable and passes the radio test VERY well. If you tell someone go to keyword dot net...they rememember it. They are not confused. dot org is still heavily assiciated with organizations while dotnet...well it's just internet. mobi has almost no recognition. When I go to the casino I like to play the games where the odds are mostly in my favor. For those willing to play roulette..enjoy the mobi and yes if you hit you might hit big but if you lose...you will have no chips left to gamble. dotnet presents good opportunities imho and I just like to share my opinion (as many well know).

I don't think because of my posts everyone is going to run out and buy dotnets...but hey...when in a year or two a couple people listened...they might think back and say "yeah...Labrocca was right glad I listened to him".

dotnet is the safe bet imho..maybe it won't skyrocket but it will surely continue to see gains

There is no silver lining in the .mobi live auction showing. .mobi fell flat on it's face. The only time I saw a paddle going up for a .mobi was for the 2 that sold. The sucker herd is thinning.
