Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a frustrating experience I had today while trying to acquire a domain.
Given the nature of our industry, I highly doubt I am the only one who has run into this, and I wanted to see if others have faced a similar situation.
Here is a quick breakdown of what happened:
I spotted a domain I wanted to buy. To be thorough, I checked its availability at two separate, well-known registrars. Both showed it as available.
I decided to make the actual purchase through a third registrar. I entered the domain, and it initially showed as available there as well.
As I proceeded to the cart, the site suddenly lagged. When the page finally loaded, it stated the domain was now unavailable, and conveniently prompted me to use their premium brokerage service to acquire it.
Fortunately, I still had the checkout tab open from the very first registrar I had consulted. I quickly switched back to that window, rushed through the checkout process, and successfully closed the deal.
I immediately checked the WHOIS records, which confirmed that the registration went through and I am the official owner of the domain.
I took screenshots of the entire sequence at the third registrar for my own records.
While I am relieved that I managed to secure the name, the experience was incredibly stressful. Seeing a registrar instantly pivot from "available" to "unavailable - hire our broker" in a matter of seconds feels like a highly opportunistic and unethical practice.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior recently? I would love to hear your thoughts or similar stories.
