Speculations on Domain Industry

There is one thing which is crystal clear about domain industry :

  • Dot Com investors hate the new gTLDs!

Why? Because before the new G era, "the domain investors" invested on millions of dot Com domains, even a regular domainer today held hundreds of domains in their portfolio.

The new gTLDs have been the biggest nightmare for the serious dot Com investors and will continue to be..

When you see the statistics, dot Com domain sales dropped dramatically since the new gTLDs introduced to the market.

The demand on new extensions excited millions of people all over the world since it is an unexplored land on Web.

There are thousands of generic names available to be registered.

Comparing to dot Com, where people registering 4 letter non-sense domains or ridiculous made up (brandable) names...

Most of you know that travel.agency sold for 3000 USD in the beginning of this year.

Earlier travel.agency sold for $9999 at Flippa in May 2016.

And today Travel.Agency directs to a ridiculous domain name : http://www.jdjdjdjdjdjdj.com/

Search and see yourself...

I personally believe that the owner of travel.agency is still the same person since the day it was registered.

Pure speculation that hits the top news on every domain related media available on the Web.

Ever since the news about travel.agency, there have been dozens of topics created on domain related websites..

Nice move by dot Com speculators against their biggest competitor: the new gTLDs.

But not smart enough..

The first domain was registered back at 1985 and it was a dot Com, yet majority of the Million Dollar domain sales took place between 2007-2017.

The industry needed 22 to 32 years to reach a maturity.

Wait and see the victory of new gTLDs...

Thanks Brad for your contribution.
Have you heard about casino.online sale?
This gTLD domain sold for $201,250
Well that excites me!
What do you think about this?

Oh, you mean the registry reserved sale that has no relevance to domain investors?

Let me know when a domain investor is able to turn a worthwhile profit on new extensions that is worth the time, money, and effort spent.

I am also not sure if it is a sale or a "sale". AKA some registry hype when it is really a marketing deal like with several other top registry "sales".

I have totally different opinion then Kate. I think for domain investors new gTLDs are very good opportunity to earn money. But the investments has to be done now, not after years when all will be safe and stabilized, but whole opportunity will be totally gone.

Those who are afraid and not investing today will have nothing in their hands in few years. I dare to predict they will envy those who have invested, very much.

But they will unfortunately have empty hands. We call it 'late to the party'. It will be quite sad imo

:)

Sometimes it's a good idea to skip the Jim Jones forest party.

I could not be bothered rehashing them but there have been many registry "sales" that are actually lease deals, marketing deals, or have other considerations behind the actual sales price.

No.
But thanks for sharing Mr. Carleone
I am more excited by this news: http://www.dnjournal.com/archive/lowdown/2017/dailyposts/20170323.htm

Yes, that's the plan and you took it hook, line and sinker. Does that feel good? Marketing. Get the domainers excited about registry sales, giving them hope somehow that will translate in getting some sales themselves. Yet that thread for domainers posting up their own sales looks a little empty. I'm still waiting for some to post up their sales they like to talk about it but never back up.

I would say holders of category killers in .com which are worth millions of dollars at the moment do not need to join..they anyway mostly spend their time relaxing at exotic islands in their luxury villas, so they have better things to do.

For those holding nice and large .com portfolios, where their best names are not in millions, but in mid -high Xx xxx max, I would say though they should consider to join the 'forest party'. If not for anything else, it is always clever not to have all your assests in one extension :)

If it's the king extension, it's very smart. There is no debate whether it will take off or not, it already won. You can diversify within. You're investing in extensions that could fail or never have any real market, when you can be putting that money in .com.

Lets say some day I made a good sale from my portfolio and when I announce it you won`t believe that because you dont believe in new gTLDs?
Is this what you mean @JB Lions

Yes, I would believe it. I know some have made sales. If and when that day ever comes that you get a sale, post in that thread. Maybe one day lolwarrior will post his .vip sales in that thread as well.

Diversifying into crappy assets is no better of a plan.

Frank Schilling diversified into owning a bunch of crappy extensions (guitars, tattoo, etc.). Seemed to work out pretty well for him (other than losing millions of dollars and credibility in the process).

there will be more launches, hard to miss everything. better late to the party than being too early in .party
Wrong my friend.

Almost all semanticaly reasonable TLDs are rolled out in first gTLD round, for some of the strings there was very tough competition between registries.

So do not expect too much great TLDs coming in future..maybe .web, that is for sure, but then only maybe few more and it is completed imho. Time is now, not in few years :)

Brad here is the point.
You can`t blame Frank for his genius..
But also you can`t generalize the quality of new gTLDs that Frank own

He is not a domain trader @JB Lions , as far as I know he is a domain investor.
So my answer to you will be in the next 5 years..
Hope you will stick around on NAMEPROS

I hope you do not expect people to post you their sales to the thread you have created. No one in his right mind will do it. Well..maybe if we see your sales first: should I create a thread for that? Are YOU willing to share with us? :)
