that would create more spam in the newbies section with more newbies posting there

well newbies section is for newbie questions and not meant specifically for newbie people.

for example even if i have a noob question like: "how do i create a account at godaddy" then i need to post there.

this will defeat the whole purpose of having a "newbie" section because the threads there will not remain "noob thread" but will be forced threads relating to every conceivable topic because those people will no have anything elsewhere to post

I know two excellent plugins for vBulletin...but they require 3.6x

Letting to post new members only in the newbie section is not a solution.

Last week I saw for example a new member that wanted to buy a domain for 50k, he would not have bothered to post that request in the domain wanted forum, if he would have had to post 10 times in the newbie section.

Or many new members are already domainers (let's just think how it would be if BonkersTwo had to post in the newbie section ... :) ). He would not have bothered to do that, and would not have registered with NP.

Solution is simple, as Bill said. Report bad posts. NP staff is moving fast. Keep up the good work,

Alex

I'm considering disabling the tag for members posting on their f... keywords in it (like 'nokia', 'viagra', etc)

Nice! I really like those ideas. If it's possible, the first one would crack down on a lot of it (although the actual spam posts would still exist without links...). :tu:
but the spam bots would not come marching down. Easy work for you guys then to just monitor human-spam.

And moreover what is the harm in that?

Many of the above mentioned suggestions are unnecessary...there is a very easy way to stop spammers...simply add a field on the registration form saying something along the lines of "What is the name of this site?" (answer: namepros) and if they dont type namepros in, they cant register...very simple.

I've done it on all my sites and don't get a single spam signup for that reason.

Or better yet, something taken from the rules page. :tu: New members will be forced to read the rules... maybe that's not really the direction to go, though.

But once the guy behind all the spam bots see that his bots are not signing up/and or posting, he will add some feature into his script to add that form and still get past it. If its worth their time, they'll do it.

The chances of that happening are very slim, Camron. I've got forums with huge amounts of members and I've used this method for a good 2 or 3 years, its not yet been bypassed...you simply have to make your signup for unique...thats it.

That might stop alot of spam bots but theres still the problem of human spam..

I dont think its possible to prevent human spam :p It would be great if there was though :D

Maybe we need to get Akismet integrated into vB...that would stop spam dead!
