If 100,000 consumers are willing to pay a minimum of $60 to speculate on .MOBI domain names.

...THEN...

...And I'm going to use my MBA on this one... wink....

There is ALREADY a fraction of high value consumers who are willing to pay multiples of that for great generic .MOBI names.

AND, there is a fraction of that fraction who is willing to pay even more.

So, TODAY, there are people out there who will pay multiples of registry for a great .MOBI name. :)

Congratulate yourself. You've already won early adopter...

Jeremy, interesting insights, let's examine:

Based on the existing .mobi speculation, we can assume that 100k rational buyers determined that EV(.mobi purchase) > P for a given domain. Thus, the market cleared for a large number of domains, this is true.

Now, given varying elasticities of demand, we can assume that there does exist surplus in the market s.t. WTP > P @ P=X*, so that a resale market does exist -- the main question, however, is about the elasticity of substitution -- i.e. which domains are in high demand, and is the market liquid enough to support a broad, or narrow, resale market.

It's important to understand that the liquidity in the marketplace comes from 2 main sources right now: telecom companies (who sunrised and TM allocated most of the names they wanted) and domain investors (who picked up .mobis as investments.)

Therefore, I would say it is difficult to infer on the market potential of the extension, per se. As a proof by contradiction, suppose that a great deal of surplus exists in the market for resale, then we would expect rational investors to buy all of those domains -- therefore, either the downside risk is high (and it is) or there is imperfect information in the market (there is there too.)

In sum, we're in the first inning of a 9 inning .mobi game and it's really too early to tell. Cheers, Brad, RFM

Absolutely, it's only been what 3 days since landrush it's entirely too early to tell anything about a .mobi market, the only hard facts we have are how many names have been regged since the 26th.

100k good number in the short time but how will it progress. IHMO i think the hype over .mobi will die down rather quickly, and it will start to pick back up when users start actually using the ext.

This will be the time when us early adopters will see the value of our names go up , but until then we need to develop what we have so when ppl start using the ext they will see content there instead of parking pages. Which will in effect have the name garner popularity faster. And besides I believe that if .mobi registry sees a parking page they will suspend the name ( dont quote me on that:) )

And then again I could be totally wrong, but hey thats the risk you take, and i think it is worth the risk to be able to take advantage of the next revolution.

I was once, but everything took so long to load and looked crappy on my phone that I never used it. I think I will use it again in a year when there are plenty of .mobi sites out there.

Same experience as most, so from what I see this .mobi venture is entirely

at the mercy of the technology getting to a state where people will love to

use it and can afford it.

You donot have to wait a year any more. Sign up now and visit any wap based name or even google, you will see better speeds and fast loads. Let us know how much it costs by the way with your provider.

Do you have proof for the bolded statement in your post.

Btw, I like your fact based analysis.

On Cingular, if you do not have a Media.Net plan (~$20/month), web browsing is 1 cent per kb.

I tried out my domain (carguide.mobi) and the GoDaddy temp page worked great.

My Nokia screen is tiny, so I will focus my content development on small icons and text links.
