So far every keyword I checked is available for $55,000. Yearly premium renewal fee business model is not going to work. They'll realize this soon and drop it.

Yes anything decent is saved by this registry. I don't know but my guess is that they will hold this extension for themselves until big news agencies pay up big. They hold loads of extensions so they could possibly do just that if they run the other extensions well.

Your alternative use for BBC.news made me chuckle. It looks like the BBC don't own bbc.net, so possibly you could have gotten away with it. Having said that, I think the .news brings additional context, so maybe you would have had a battle to keep it.
